Pinhole photography, also known as camera
obscura which is Latin for "dark chamber", is a form of photography that does not involve a lens. A pinhole camera captures images by using a light-tight box or container with a tiny pinhole on the other end of it while a piece of opaque tape or cardboard serves as a shutter.
The camera obscura was developed by Abu Ali Al-Hasan Ibn al-Haitham in the 19th century, who was an Arab scientist that specialized in optics. He developed it to illustrate how the eye processes an image. He noticed that if there was a small hole of light in a box, the image would project upside down on the opposite wall. A small mirror could then be used to flip the image upright.
In the beginning, camera obsura was used to observe solar eclipses safely. Leonardo da Vinci was one of the first to use the device in relation to art. Thanks to the discovery of this phenomenon and advances in technology, we have a way to capture memories and moments in history.
There are a variety of ways you can construct pinhole cameras, but for a basic pinhole camera, you will need the following items:
An old paint can
No. 16 bead-threading eedle
Black matte(non glossy) paint
Black masking tape
Paper film(photo paper)
Permanent marker
First, paint the inside of the empty paint can with the black matte paint. Then take a heavy object or a hammer to help push the needle through the side of the paint can, but the hole must be perpendicular to the can. Lastly, draw a circle around the hole so you know where the hole is since it is so small.
Taking a picture with a pinhole camera is very simple. In a dark room, take a sheet of paper film(photo paper) put small piece of masking tape on the non-glossy side and attach it to the inside of the can opposite side of the hole is on. Once that it done, put the paint lid back on and take some masking tape and tape it around the lid so light can't get in. Lastly before you go outside, cover the pinhole with a magnet, so light can't pass through.
Taking a picture with a pinhole is all about the lighting. Natural light from the sun is recommended best for the paper to be properly exposed. The time of day is also a factor too. If its really sunny then the hole needs to be uncovered for 5-8 seconds, if its kinda cloudy, you might need to exposed it longer. It truly is a "trial and error" process. That's what I love about pinhole photography. No two prints are the same.
When the paper is exposed enough, cover the hole back up dip then go back to the dark room and put the paper in the chemicals it like you do any other print
