When writing a research paper, bibliographies are necessary to cite all of the sources used. Also called a "works cited," page.

To summarize a source, begin by asking questions about the source, such as "what is the point of this book or article?" Some annotations stop at this step; for a more detailed annotation follow the next two steps

The second step to annotation is to look back at the source and judge its reliability.
Is the source relevant to the topic at hand,
and more importantly, is the source reliable/valid?
The various citations - in APA formatting- inform readers exactly what kinds of materials are being described and exactly where to go retrieve them.
The last step involved in annotating a source is once again judging its impact on the paper at hand, and asking some relevant questions. How is the source helpful to your research?

Title of publication
Date of publication
The place (city: state) of publication of a book
The publishing company of a book
The volume number of a magazine or printed encyclopedia
Annotation should be
Each line of the annotation is indented 5 spaces
What to collect from an online resource?
Author and editors name
Title of the page
The company or organization who posted the website
The Web address for the page
The last date you looked at the page
An annotation is a short summary of the source. Annotating sources involves paraphrasing, or creating your own rendition of essential information.
Paraphrasing is vital to the writing of any research paper. Paraphrasing reduces the need to overly quote a source, and in the process, you are able to understand the information more readily.
MLA format is generally used for studies in the field of humanities
