By: Evelyn, Jennifer, Brittany, Angie, and Julio Diegetic and Non-Diagetic Sounds Diegetic Sounds Non-Diegetic Sounds What does that mean? Non-Diagetic sounds are those that are
neither visible on the screen and have been added to the film to make the experience of the film more BELIEVEABLE. Examples of Non-Diegetic Sounds in Casablanca 2) When the bartender spins Rick around on his chair and kisses him on both cheeks, saying, "Boss, you've done a beautiful thing," Rick smacks him on the back and replies, "Get away from me, you crazy Russian." We hear the sound of the smack quite a while after Rick hits the bartender A presentation on Casablanca's sounds... Diegetic sounds, or ACTUAL sounds could be... -The voices of characters -Sounds made by objects in the film. -music coming from an instrument in the film. Non-Diegetic sounds could be... -A narrator's commentary in a film -Sound effects that are added to
increase the dramatic "effect". -Music to set the mood in a film. 1) In early scenes, gunshot sounds had to be
added. It was when a man was running away, the shot was fured, and he falls to the floor 5 seconds later. 3) When the trumpet and trombone players raise their instruments to play "La Marseillaise", the music begins a split second before they start playing. 4) When Yvonne is kicked out of Rick's in the first scene there, the comments she shouts as she walks outside don't match her lip movement at all. Examples of Diegetic Sounds in Casablanca... -Character dialogue and the memorable quotes. "Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine." "Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship." -Sounds created by objects in the film. The scene in which Ilsa is with Rick in Paris and
and her arm makes her drop the glass. The glass hits the surface and makes a sound. -Music created by instruments in the film. The songs... -"Shine" and "Knock on Wood" which were performed by Dooly Wilson during the opening scene at Rick's. Effects of Diegetic and Non-Diegetic Sounds on Audiences Some of the most effective sounds
in film are used for everyday events.
These sounds are added to make the experience
of watching the film more realistic.
With the help of diegetic and non-diegetic sounds, audiences are more likely to believe what's ocurring in films.
