Defending the Faith: Atheism
Transcript of Defending the Faith: Atheism
the doctrine or belief that there is no god.
disbelief in the existence of a supreme being or beings. Atheists generally believe that there is no need for a god of any kind and that science is the best way to explain our existence. Their belief system is based on the idea of logical thought, supported by scientific fact. Since our GOD is not tangible, they reject his existence because the untangible cannot be quantified by science. Atheism holds that Christianty is illogical and based on a system of lies. In fact, some atheists would go so far as to say that religion, especially Christianity, is the cause of so many of the worlds problems.
“Faith is an evil precisely because it requires no justification and brooks no argument. Teaching children that unquestioned faith is a virtue primes them — given certain other ingredients that are not hard to come by — to grow up into potentially lethal weapons for future jihads or crusades.”
—From The God Delusion (Houghton Mifflin Company)
Lets look a little closer at how atheism began:
Atheism, in one form or another, has been around for a long time. In Bible times we see those, who at the very least, ignore God. In the account of Noah, we see that the only people that acknowledge God can be counted on two hands. When we read of Abraham and Lot, we see the cities of SODOM and GAMMORAH content to worship their own Gods. Conventional Atheism did not make its debut until the early 19th century. The three seperate movents of Rationalism, Freethought, and Liberalism; which were borne from the French Revolution, sparked the ideals
that are central to atheism today.
The first tennants of Atheism were laid out in a publication entitled "The Necessity of Atheism"
This pamphlet was written by Percy Bysshe Shelley in 1792 and put atheism on the map as a notable movement.
You might recognize the name Karl Marx. He was a German political economist that was well known as an atheist. He is quoted as saying,"Religious suffering is, at one and the same time, the expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people." In other words he belived that religion is just another way for humans to escape reality. WHY? Is it important to know about how Atheism works? Atheism is now an evangelical religion in and of itself.
As much as they would like to deny it; atheists have a unified and distinct religion.
The dangers of atheism are clear. It is an attractive and popular belief system.
Popular because it holds no one accountable.
More and more it seems that atheism is on the offensive agianst Christianity.
We have to be ready to discuss our GOD with authority but also with confidence.
The favorite weapon of the atheist is doubt and the will use it at every opportunity.
HOW CAN WE DEFEND OUR FAITH? What is the source of everything we know about GOD? HIS WORD: THE BIBLE We can't really use the Bible when
we first introduce the Gospel to an Atheist. Atheists do not submit to the Bible as an authority because, simply put, they do not belive in the source of the Bible. Furthermore, most atheists know the Bible as well or better than we do. They make it their business to know our beliefs and out apparent weaknesses. We first must show the atheist what his beliefs fail to do. Atheism fails to explain many things but the two failures I will discuss shortly today are...
Atheism fails to explain existence.
Atheism fails to explain morality. Atheists love science. Science is the means that Atheists use to affirm their beleifs. Our most complete and clear answer to the atheist's reliance on science takes us all the way back to the beginning.
The very beginning.
The comsmological argument is the best wat to explain the Christian view of creation to an atheist.
THE BIG BANG: ThisIs the best explinaton of our existence that science can provide. But it cannnot exlain how the universe got here. That gets tricky. You see, eventually one must ask science where the big bang came from. What caused the event that casued the big bang? And so on............ That is where the cosmological argument comes into play. Do DOes D SO WHICH IS MORE LOGICAL??
THE UNIVERSE CAME ABOUT BY CHANCE WITH NO ORIGIN BUT A SEEMINGLY INFINATE SERIES OF CAUSES.
THE UNIVERSE WAS CREATED BY THE UNCAUSED CAUSE....... THE COSMOLOGIAL ARGUMENT CALLS ON SIMPLE LOGIC. YOU CANNOT HAVE INFINITE BEGINNINGS OR YOU HAVE NO BEGINNING. THERE HAS TO BE A FACTOR OUTSIDE OF TIME AND SPACE OR IN CONTROL OF IT.
GOD FITS THESE PARAMETERS PERFECTLY
THIS IS NOT TO SAY THAT SCIENCE IS USLESS OR WRONG
our GOD ww WHERE DOES MORALITY COME FROM? athiests believe that morality is simply a system of desirable traits that
evolved in social animals over millions if not billions of years. SOUNDS POSISBLE? Well i IT IS POSSIBLE TO BE MORAL WITHOUT A DIRECT KNOWLEDGE OF GOD
THIS IS EVIDENCED WORLDWIDE
THE REAL QUESTION IS WHY DO ALL HUMANS OPERATE BY THESE RULES? IIN EVEN THOSE WHO HAVE NEVER MET AN ATHIEST HAVE MORALS
DOES THIS FACT TRUMP OUR BELIEF THAT OUR MORALS COME FROM THE CREATOR??
The truth is that GOD'S truth is built into us
it is a living part of us.
We will be tested sooner than later. When we encounter people with
atheistic beliefs we must do what the Bible commands.
We must share the word. We show them GOD. We must share the truth
Beyond that. We have no responsibilty.
Ultimately. They must choose.
