His Dark Materials Trilogy by Philip Pullman
Transcript of His Dark Materials Trilogy by Philip Pullman
The Subtle Knife
Lyra and Pantalaimon find themselves in a strange new realm called Cittàgazze, and they are not alone. A 12-year-old boy, named Will Parry, has also found his way into this new realm while running for his life after he accidentally killed someone while trying to protect his mother. Lyra and Will discover a dangerously powerful object, The Subtle Knife. With it, they come closer to the truth about their own destinies.
In a parallel universe, Lyra Belacqua journeys with her daemon, Pantalaimon, to the far North to prevent her best friend and other kidnapped children from becoming the subject of the gruesome experiments carried out by a mysterious organization.
The Golden Compass
With help from Iorek Byrnison, the armored bear, and two Gallivespian spies, Lyra and Will must go to the world of the dead. Meanwhile, Dr. Mary Malone builds a magnificent Amber Spyglass, an assassin is hunting Dr. Malone, and Lord Asriel (Lyra's father), with an army of angels, is fighting a rebellion against the Authority. The fate of all the worlds, living and dead, has comes to depend on two children and a daemon.
The Amber Spyglass
The books were challenged at Conkwright Middle School in Winchester, Kentucky because Lyra drinks wine and eats poppy with her meals. They were also challenged because of an anti-Christian doctrine within the books.
The trilogy was challenged at Shallowater Middle School in Lubbock, Texas and pulled from library shelves at Ortega Middle School in Alamosa, Colorado because of the “anti-religious messages” within the books. The District officials later returned the books to Ortega Middle School's library shelves.
In 2008, The books were challenged in The Calgary Catholic School District, in Alberta, Canada, and The Halton Catholic School District, in Ontario, Canada.
The districts said that the books were "written by an atheist where the characters and text are anti-God, anti-Catholic, and anti-religion."
In 2007, the trilogy was banned at St. John Neumann Middle School and Lourdes High School in Oshkosh, Wisconsin because there was concern about “anti-Christian messages” presented within the books.

In 2009, the books were challenged in The Dufferin-Peel Catholic School District in Ontario, Canada. They stayed on the school library shelves, but a sticker was put on the inside front cover of the books saying that the "representations of the church in this novel are purely fictional and do not reflect the real Roman Catholic Church or the Gospel of Jesus Christ."
The books were later returned to library shelves in The Halton Catholic School District and The Calgary Catholic School District returned them to the libraries two months after ordering their removal.
There were no court cases connected with this trilogy.
The River Ridge Library has all three of the books, but they are not in the Cherokee County curriculum.
