Website Critique Assignment Introduction Olay is an American skin care product. It is one of Procter & Gamble's multi- billion dollar brands and was originated in South Africa as Oil of Olay. It was unique in the early days because it was a pink fluid rather than a cream, packaged in a heavy bottle. Today, Olay has extended its heritage as a moisturizer to stay looking young, to formally creating "anti- aging" category. Was the website User- friendly? Yes, the website of the product Olay is user-friendly because it is not difficult to view and discover the information provided on the page for the product to be accessible and obtainable. For example, when you go on the home page and click on Explore Products; you are able to find abundance of information on the various products they produce such as facial cleansing, regenerist, total effects, etc. It lets you explore various categories that are easy to read and contemplate. The website is also not difficult to move from page to page because it provides lots of information on one page in each category. For example, when you click on Explore Products, and view Fresh Effects, it shows a page providing tons of information on each of the products in that category. The page is well organized for the consumer to observe the product without difficulty. Overall the website is user-friendly because it means the product can be used and maintained easily and conveniently by consumers. Who sponsored or paid for the production of this website? Why? The sponsor of Olay is the Procter & Gamble (P&G) for the production of this website. The reason why they are sponsored for this product is because they provide branded products and services of superior quality and value that improve the lives of the world’s consumers, and for generations to come. As a result, consumers will reward them with leadership sales, profit and value creation, allowing people, shareholders and the communities in which we live and work to prosper. P&G brings beloved brands to consumers around the world and Olay is one of them. Was the person (were the individuals) who wrote the information on the website used a credible source of information, i.e. are they experts on this subject? The person or individuals who wrote the information on the website used a reliable source of information because their approach is based on broadly accepted practices for the scientific assessment of safety. They go through a process that requires them to stay on leading edge of new scientific knowledge in such diverse areas as analytical chemistry, biostatistics, computer science and modeling, environmental science and engineering, genomics, molecular biology, systems biology, and toxicology. They are experts on this subject because they collect data based on their observation to determine what levels of an ingredient are safe for humans and the environment, using conservative assumptions that are recommended by regulatory agencies and scientists around the world. First, they evaluate the potential for an ingredient to cause adverse effects using published and accepted scientific methods. Then, they evaluate potential exposures for people and the environment, considering worst-case product use scenarios based on their understanding of reach the environment. Finally, they build into their assessments an understanding of the environmental aspects of the product’s life cycle, from manufacturing through their use and disposal. Did you like the home page on this website? Why? Yes, I like the home page because it was very easy to find the information I was looking for. The visuals are appealing and it’s extremely easy to navigate the home page, which makes me satisfied with the experience of using this website. I feel that the creator of this website had done a better job of promoting a greater variety of their products. For example, on the home page it introduces the new Regenerist Eye & Lash Duo; the first eye and lash treatment from Olay that provides a 360° eye care solution. This informs the consumer that they have produced a better product that would bring satisfaction to their customers. Another reason why I like the home page on this website is because they have a skin care consultation and there are several ways to get in touch with the producers of Olay. They have product recommendations and advice designed specifically for customers to find answers to the most frequently asked questions in 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Overall, the home page has a unique set of design. Do you feel that the graphics and layout of the Home Page were effective? Why? Yes, I felt that the graphics and layout of the home page were effective because the graphics aid in selling the product through effective visual communication. It applied to the products and elements of the company identity such as logos, colors, packaging, and text. Together these defined as advertising which consumes the attention of the customer. The graphic design was also applied effectively for the layout and formatting of education materials to make the information more accessible and more readily understandable. For example, when I viewed the homepage, the first thing that caught my attention was the graphical introduction of the Regenerist Eye & Lash Duo product because it was in the center of the home page and big enough for me to see. This is why it was effective. Did you feel that you learned a great deal, from reading the contents of this website? Discuss. I felt that I’ve learned a great deal from reading the contents of this website because it describes and offers the latest products from Olay and the type of ingredient they use. The website allows me to view all the products the company has been selling and the products that would be beneficial for my skin. It informs me how Olay is committed to provide safe products to their consumers. For example, when I read the product reviews and seen how much customers rate each product, it gave me a better understanding of how well the consumer liked the product. It also provides the product information, application instructions and full ingredients. It’s easy to learn the steps on applying the product and the website shows videos and comments of how dermatologists and estheticians provide this product to their patients. This is why I felt that I learned a great deal from reading the contents of this website. Would you recommend that someone else refer to this website? Why? I would only recommend teenage girls and women to refer to this website because it will help them find the type of product they need for smooth skin surface, liberate their skin from dirt, oil, and makeup, and get beautiful skin at any age. This website has a skin care consultation with product recommendations and advice designed specifically for them. All you have to do is answer some simple questions that are not personal and hard to reply. Just like the information written on the back of the product at the stores, this website allows you to explore the product by viewing the product information, application instructions, and full ingredients online. It is easier to buy it online than just waiting in line, by the click of a button. In conclusion, I would highly recommend that teenage girls and women refer to this website for more information for the better understanding of this product. If you could redesign this website (assuming you had the knowledge to do so), how would you change it? Why? Original Website Redesign Website If I could redesign this website, I would change the background of the black screen and replace it with a collage of all the beautiful faces of women and girls in the world who used this product and all the products of Olay. That way the home page would look more attractive and effective. In the center, I would show a slideshow and five videos of all the latest commercial and advertisements convincing consumers to buy this product so that they can see the new brands and different techniques scientists have used. Underneath that section, I would show the most recent Olay products that have new formulas and new treatment because that way the consumer can scan through the most popular and least popular products that are beneficial for their skin. Finally, I would have the rest of the space for any comments and messages for any satisfactions on a product or for any questions and concerns. This is what I would do if I were to redesign this website. Did you find any gender bias, stereotyping, racial or cultural bias? Discuss what it was. If you did not find any, show two examples of sentences which indicate that there is no bias. Bias is a predetermined view on a subject. It is not taking into account the pros of other views and focusing on the cons. Of course there is bias in advertising on this website. If there was no bias, the ad would not be very effective. Does this phrase,“we have a decent product but the other individual’s is way better,” make you want to buy that product? Advertisers ignore the parts of their product that makes the other product look better. For instance, this add says you can have an “Olay body.” Making an Olay body sound like the best kind of body is an example of advertisers using their bias to make you want to buy their product. They don’t have another word to describe how your skin will turn out to be, so they choose the phrase “Olay body,” trying to make it sound like this product is better than perfect. This is one kind of subjective validation, which is a Cognitive bias that validates words,
initials, statements, or signs as accurate because one is able to find them
personally meaningful and significant. This is one kind of bias that I’ve found. Any other comments you wish to include about you website? Overall, I think this website is good because it is accurate, it has authority, objectivity, coverage and it is currect. Accuracy
