What is isolation?
The physical or political distancing from other groups
Why had China and Japan enforced isolationism of HUNDREDS
China's Political System:
Ruling family of China for almost 300 years! Government type = Monarchy
Japans Political System:
Japan was ruled mostly by the SHOGUN, but an Emperor still existed. Government type= FEUDALISM

- What did Britain (and other European countries) want from CHINA?
- To trade with China:
1.) Foreigner trade was conducted at ONE port
2.) KOW TOW- ritual "Bowing" performed to Chinese authorities

A civil War in China fought for almost 14 years; led by a Chinese Christian convert who had a dream to revolt against the government
** Internal unrest was an obvious indication that China

Japan traded at ONE PORT and enforced KOW-TOW
Commodore Matthew Perry:
US military leader- was sent to request more
open trade with Japan (1853)
