Transcript of Goats

GOATS
Goats are members of the Bovidae family which is a family that includes, sheep, antelopes, gazelles etc. There are over 300 distinct breeds of goats and they are one of the oldest domesticated species in the world.
HABITAT
Areas like deserts.
Typically in grasslands.
Tropical forests.
Feral goats usually live in rugged mountain areas and alpine meadows.
Since they are grazing animals they naturally need to live in areas with vegetation.

PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
Characteristics of goats include:
Long, pointed ears
Flat, upward-turning tails.
Most species of male goats naturally have two horns on the top of their head.
The male goats mainly use their horns to defend themselves and from unwanted predators.
Some species of goat also have females that have two horns on the tops of their heads.
Their fur is either brown, black, white or tan.

COMPARISON: SHEEP AND GOAT
FACTS
Like sheep, a goat’s eye is rectangular rather than round. They have excellent night vision and will often browse during the night.
Goats discovered coffee! Apparently in Ethiopia a goat herder saw goats behaving more actively and energetically after eating from a particular bush. He then tried it himself and felt uplifted, awake and full of energy.
Goats are naturally curious. While they don’t actually eat tin cans and paper, they are often seen chewing odds and ends mainly to find out more about these objects.
The London Telegraph reported last year that goats have accents. Scientists at the Queen Mary University of London discovered the calls of goats change as they grown older and move into different groups. Goats in the same group sound similar to each other as they spend more time together.
The group of goats called fainting goats muscles’ paralyze when they are in panic and they simply fall down.

A ZOOLOGIST'S POINT OF VIEW...
ON GOATS
Goats are a quite interesting group of Bovids. They are naturally curious mammals which I find amusing as I saw one goat inspecting an empty tin can, possibly figuring out what it was and if it was edible. They are not very social as they prefer to stay independent. Goats, though, do excel in long-term memory.

Goats seemed very plain animals to me at first, though, after a number of studies, I have come to the conclusion that goats are very fascinating animals indeed.
