Transcript of Writing a Thesis Statement

By: Daijeonna Walker Writing a Thesis Statement What is a thesis statement? A thesis statement consists of one or two sentences that guide an essay. It introduces the essay's topic and includes a summary of the essay.

A thesis statement is found in the introductory paragraph of a essay, and is normally the last few sentences. Weak Thesis Statements Are vague: Raise an interesting topic or question but do not specify an argument
Offer plot summary or obvious truths instead of an argument
Offer opinion rather than an argument (cannot be proven with textual evidence)
Are too broad or too complex for the length of the paper Examples of Weak Thesis Statements Experts estimate that half of elementary school children consume nine times the recommended daily allowance of sugar.
Explanation: This statement is specific, but it isn’t a thesis. It merely reports a statistic instead of making an assertion.
There are some negative and positive aspects to the Banana Herb Tea Supplement.
Explanation: This is a weak thesis statement. First, it fails to take a stand. Second, the phrase negative and positive aspects is vague.
Companies need to exploit the marketing potential of the Internet, and Web pages can provide both advertising and customer support.
Explanation: This is a weak thesis statement because the reader can’t decide whether the paper is about marketing on the Internet or Web pages. Strong Thesis Statements Answer a specific question
Take a distinct position on the topic
Are debatable
Appropriately focused for the page length of the assignment
Allow your reader to anticipate the organization of your argument Possible Thesis Statements While both Northerners and Southerners believed they fought against tyranny and oppression, Northerners focused on the oppression of slaves while Southerners defended their own right to self-government.
Explanation: This thesis presents a way of interpreting evidence that illuminates the significance of the question.
Through its contrasting river and shore scenes, Twain’s Huckleberry Finn suggests that to find the true expression of American democratic ideals, one must leave “civilized” society and go back to nature.
Explanation: This thesis statement presents an interpretation of a literary work based on an analysis of its content. Works Cited Page "How Do I Write a Thesis Statement?" Because the Internet is filled with tremendous marketing potential, companies should exploit this potential by using Web pages that offer both advertising and customer support.
Explanation: This is a strong thesis because it shows that the two ideas are related.
Because Banana Herb Tea Supplement promotes rapid weight loss that results in the loss of muscle and lean body mass, it poses a potential danger to customers.
Explanation: This is a strong thesis because it takes a stand, and because it's specific. Class Exercise Discuss possible thesis statements for the following topics.

1. Compare and contrast the reasons why the North and South fought the Civil War.
