Scaffolding
Seamus Heaney

Scaffolding
Masons, when they start upon a building,
Are careful to test out the scaffolding;

Make sure that planks won’t slip at busy points,
Secure all ladders, tighten bolted joints.

And yet all this comes down when the job’s done
Showing off walls of sure and solid stone.

So if, my dear, there sometimes seem to be
Old bridges breaking between you and me

Never fear. We may let the scaffolds fall
Confident that we have built our wall.

Learning Intention
Examine and discuss 'Scaffolding' by Seamus Heaney
When you think of scaffolding what do you think of?

Think about one strong relationship that you have in your life. What makes it strong?
How do you think the title of the poem ties in?
What do you think the poem is about?
Do you think marriage is still as poplar today as it was in Heaney's youth?

What makes a strong couple?
Masons, when they start upon a building,
Are careful to test out the scaffolding;
