The Moon Phases
And Why They Happen Presented By Arshaq Ahmed
What Are The Moon Phases
The moon phases are the shapes of the moon in the night sky, well as we see it. There are 8 different phases of the moon the New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter and Waning Crescent.

About The Phases Of The Moon
Why The Moon Phases Happen
Common Misconceptions
The most common misconception is that the Earths shadow is causing the moon phases, we think this because a New Moon may happen because the earth is blocking it but in order for this to be true the moon would have to make it's own light but now we know that moon light is actually sun light.
The second most common misconception is that the clouds cause the moon phases. It was also thought that the moon had clouds like Earth and these clouds blocked the moon, but we know this is wrong. For 2 reasons the moon does not have clouds and if this was true than the moon would have to have it's own light.
New Moon Phase
The new moon phase is when the moon is not visible in the sky.
Waxing Crescent phase
The Waxing Crescent phase of the moon is when the moon has started waxing (waxing meaning to grow) into a full moon
First Quarter Phase
The First Quarter moon phase is when the moon is about half way lit in the sky.
Waxing Gibbous Phase
The Waxing Gibbous moon phase is when the moon is coming close to a Full Moon
Full Moon Phase
The Full Moon phase is when the moon has waxed and is completely visible in the night sky and after this phase the moon will start waning (meaning to shrink)
Waning Gibbous Phase
The Waning Gibbous phase of the moon is when the moon has started to wan. The Waning Gibbous phase of the moon happens when the moon starts to shrink
Last Quarter Phase
The Last Quarter phase of the moon is when half of the moon has waned and the other half of the moon is visible.
The only reason we have the moon phases is because the moon is always half lit. We always see the same side of the moon because the moon rotate and revolves at the same speed, so we only see one side of the moon.
Waning Crescent Phase
The Waning crescent moon phase is the moon when the moon is on it's way to become a new moon and has waned even further than the Last Quarter
New Moon Phase
The New Moon phase happens when the moon is between the Earth and the Sun, which makes it difficult for us to see the moon
Waxing Gibbous phase
The Waxing Gibbous phase happens when the moon is moving and the moon is only half way lit so we are able to see only the lit part
First Quarter phase
The First Quarter moon phase happens when the moon is one quarter of the way through the cycle. This happens because we can only see a quarter of the moon.
Waxing Gibbous phase
The waxing Gibbous phase happens after the First Quarter moon phase. This moon phase happens as the moon is becoming a new moon, because the moon has rotated and more of the lit moon is visible
Full Moon Phase
The Full Moon happens when the moons lit side is visible and the moon is behind the earth and sun.
Waning Crescent Phase
The Waning Crescent moon phase happens when to the new moon is making it's trip back . This phase happens because the moon is spinning and its starts to shrink and will become a New Moon
Last Quarter Phase
The Last Quarter moon phase is the phase where the moon is three quarters of the way to the start of the moon cycle (even thought a cycle has no beginning ) and happens because the moon has waned and made it smaller.
Waning Crescent Phase
The Waning Crescent phase is the last phase until the New Moon. This happens because the moon is getting closer to the sun and will soon become a full moon
