Setting:
The story takes place at Cora's house and at the high school which Ruby and Nate attend

plot

When her drug and alcohol addicted mother abandons her, 17-year-old Ruby Cooper has to move in with her sister, Cora and her husband Jamie, after not seeing Cora for a long time. Ruby isn't to happy about this, and still wears the key to her old home on a chain around her neck. When she learns she will be transferring to a new high school, Ruby tries to run away but is caught by Nate Cross, Cora and Jamie's next-door neighbor. Through out the story Nate and Ruby become closer. Throughout the book Ruby learns the difference between accepting help and giving help.
