Transcript of Computer Basics
What is a computer?
A computer is an electronic device that stores and processes data (information).
What can you do with a computer?
producing, storing, and manipulating of text
Used mainly for accounting
A report used to communicate ideas usually in the form of slides
Some Things to Remember:
Operating Systems (OS)
The CPU (Central Processing
Unit) is considered the
computer's brain or heart
The hard disk is the computer's main, long term storage device
The sound card is an expansion card that allows the computer to send audio information to an audio device like speakers or a pair of headphones.
Applications help you accomplish a certain task, like write a letter, browse the internet or play a game; ex. Microsoft Office
The video card is an expansion card that allows the computer to send graphical information to a video display device such as a monitor, TV, or projector.
CRT (Cathode Ray Tube): Like a television
LCD Liquid Crystal Display): Flatscreen
Named for the top row of letter keys in order, it's the most common.
The keyboard lets you enter information and commands into a computer
Opens a menu
Scroll up and down
How do they compare to each other?
taskbar: shows what applications are running
Shut down - NEVER just press the power button!
Backwards or forwards
One unit of measure
1,048,576 bytes or 1,024 Kilobytes
1,073,741,824 bytes. 1,024 Megabytes, or 1,048,576 Kilobytes
1,099,511,627,776 bytes, 1,024 Gigabytes, or 1,048,576 Megabytes
Jump Drive (USB Drive)
Internal Hard Drive
External Hard Drive
Looks and works like a TV screen. The monitor paired with a graphics card makes the text and images appear on the screen.
Memory Devices are useful for sharing or transporting information
Good for backing up information
A computer's temporary storage place...where items goes when work gets done
Measured in bytes, you might hear people talk about Megabytes Gigabytes and now, terabytes.
Random Access Memory
Computer's main memory, which is used to process information, (ex working with a file or editing picture)
This is a low level memory and performs functions such as turning on the computer
Very fast storage. A quick way to access your information. Also an inexpensive way to store data.
Convenient storage. Placed into a USB port on the exterior of your computer
What is Computer
Hardware & Software?
- Computer Hardware is the physical part of the computer system, the machinery and equipment.
- Computer Software are programs that tell the computer what to do.
Windows Media Player
Computer Input Devices
Computer Devices that input information in the computer, examples:
- Key Board
- Digital Camera
Computer Devices that output information from the computer, examples:
Computer Output Devices
It is the main circuit board inside the CPU case. It holds the microprocessor, memory and other crucial circuits and components that control the operation of the Personal Computer. Every device inside or connected to a Personal Computer finds it's way to this board.
