James was born on September 2, 1766 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Job achievement
James was an apprentice for a sail-maker before the owner passed away. Then James Forten became the owner and made lots of money.
Contribution 1
He devoted much of his time and money to the abolitionist cause.
Contribution 2 and 3
2. He helped enlist 2,500 African-Americans protect Philly in the War of 1812.
Contribution 4 and 5
4.He promoted peace and temperance.

5. He devoted much energy and money to abolish slavery and gain civil rights of African-Americans.
He was a leader of the black community.
James Forten died March 4,1842
James Forten died of age at 75.
