B. Historicity and Man
MAN
A HISTORICAL BEING
?
WHAT IS
HISTORY

HISTORY
- is derived from the Greek word "HISTORIA" which means "learning by inquiry".
HISTORY
- is derived from the Greek word
"HISTORIA" which means
"learning by inquiry."
* Basically, it is man's being-in-the-world that makes man being-in-history.
As Marcel said, Man and the World are inseparably related to each other in a form of mutual exchange. Undeniably, there is indeed a
"GIVE AND TAKE"
relatedness
between man and the world.
" Man, dwells, beautifies, guards,
and transforms the world into a
world of CULTURE & CIVILIZATION."
A. History and Man
Man's relatedness to the world gives birth to history.
' There is no WORDLESS MAN and no MANLESS WORLD, there can be no MANLESS HISTORY and a "HISTORYLESS." '
' Man's making of history at the same
time man's consciousness to record
continually his affairs connected or
associated with the world. '
History is history only when understood
in the context of man's relatedness
to the world.
HOW CAN MAN MEASURE HIS RELATEDNESS TO THE WORLD?
If history really bears the record of man's relatedness to the world, so to make this relatedness as something which cannot be affected, the question is.
WHAT ABOUT THE THING WHICH IS CALLED PREHISTORIC?
DOES THIS IMPLY THAT PREHISTORY REFERS TO THE TIME WHEN MAN HAS NOT RELATED AND THEREFORE HAS NOTHING TO RECORD CONCERNING HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH THE WORLD?
...this questions can be primarily answered in terms of questions.
Is history CONCRETE or ABSTRACT ?
Where is history ?
Is history TANGIBLE ?
Can man see and touch it as such ?
** HISTORY
CAN ONLY BE PROPERLY
MEASURED IN TERMS
OF TIME.**
----------------------------------------
** HISTORY IS ALWAYS VIEWED AS TEMPORAL.**
--------------------------------------
** IT FOLLOWS THAT HISTORY
IS ALSO ABSTRACT.**
** HISTORY
AND TIME ARE FACTORS
WHICH CAN NEVER BE DISLODGED
FROM HUMAN CONSCIOUSNESS
WHICH IS THE CATEGORICAL BASIS
OF MAN'S FINDING AND REALIZING
THE MEANING OF HIS RELATEDNESS
TO THE WORLD.**
What about the epoch called PREHISTORY ?
(epoch - a significant period in history or in somebody's life. Microsoft® Encarta® )

Prehistory requires a deeper expression of man's consciousness of his relatedness to the world in a form of writing.
Since prehistory implies the absence of writing, it was only "writing" then which was absent and not man's relatedness to the world.
...whether we talk about PREHISTORY or HISTORY, Man's being a historical being should always be construed as his expression of his relatedness to the world.
MAN...
is a
HISTORICAL
BEING.
expressed by
Marcel when he said..
"There is a sense in which we are all historical beings which means that we come after other beings from whom we have received a great deal."
However, in a
more philosophical stance is the HEIDEGGER's CLAIM
"that a more primordial datum to be considered before man can be understood as a historical being is that man is himself a historicity."
----------------------------------------------------
[Primordial - existing first: existing at the beginning of time or of the development of something
Microsoft® Encarta® 2009. ©]

[datum - 1. item of information: a piece of information 2. logic given fact: a known or assumed fact that is used as the basis
for a theory, conclusion,
or inference]
[HISTORICITY -
historical authenticity:
the state or fact of being
historically
authentic.
Microsoft® Encarta® 2009. ©]

" The historicity of man is proved in that man's existence in the world is an existence in time."
The understanding
of man as a historical
being should be juxtaposed with an understanding of man as a temporal being.
[JUXTAPOSED - put side by side: to place two or more things together, especially in order to suggest a link between them or emphasize the contrast between them.]

"If there is history because there is time, then we can talk of man's past, present, and future."
In the study of evolution,
*Man's primordial appearance
on the surface of the Earth occurred through the
Homo africanus
then through the
Homo erectus
, as represented by
the 'Java Man', 'Peking man', and the
'Heidelberg man'. Then, after the Homo
africanus has evolved to Homo erectus.
Homo erectus in turn evolved to
Homo sapiens
who is
considered as the modern man.
Finally, the
Homo sapiens populated
the whole world since the
Homo sapiens occupied *ASIA*, *EUROPE*, *AFRICA*, and *AMERICA*
...then, the THREE MAJOR RACES OF MODERN MAN born...
The CAUCASIAN RACE
The NEGROID RACE
The MONGOLIAN RACE
but the question remain the same:
WHERE IS MAN NOW ?
WHAT IS THE PRESENT AND WHAT IS MAN'S PLACE AND ROLE IN IT ?
IS THERE REALLY A
PRESENT ?
The truth of the matter is that man CANNOT hold the PRESENT.
That which is understood as "here-and-now" CANNOT be kept even in split seconds.
The present is so elusive to be always kept as present, since once it occurs, it will immediately become a PAST.
however, there is one thing that MORE or LESS consoles man in the transitoriness of his present.
"When man takes
the PRESENT as his
WAY OF REMINISCING
the PAST and of his
act of making his
FUTURE."
In truth,
Man makes the future
through his
past
and the
present
. If the world unconceals itself to man so that it can
mold and give man a broader horizon of possibilities
so that he can rightly
exercise
his
freedom
, then, the
world is waiting for man to be developed further.
thus, man's transformation of the world into a world of culture and civilization can still be improved further.
"THERE IS A
BETTER WORLD
WAITING
TO BE BUILT
BY
MAN
; THERE IS A
VAST HORIZON
OF THE
FUTURE

IS
WAITING
TO BE MADE BY
MAN
."
in doing this...
Man can find his existence a
more meaningful one.
Since man's Historicity is prior to
history
and
time
.
Man's Historicity is not synonymous with a mere movement or a mere change.
instead,
* it manifest DEVELOPMENT and
CONTINUITY.
* It is at this point where man should reflect on how can he develop further his world.
He must realize
that his l
ife is a new task every day
in the
sense
that he must
repeatedly master it

towards a better tomorrow.
"Man's historicity means man's ongoing work to unveil the world so that the world can become more habitable to him and the whole human race."
"Man's historicity means man's ongoing work to
unveil the world so that
the world can become
more habitable to him
and the whole human
race."
An associate of Heidegger named RUDOLF BULTMANN claimed that there are two ways through which is happenings or occurrences of FACTS and EVENTS in history can be assessed.
NAMELY;
Geshichte
and
historie
Geshichte refers to attempts of historians to really capture how facts or events did occur.
*GESHICHTE
PROBLEM: The fact that when events did happen the historians were undeniably not around.
If
Geshichte
is POSSIBLE, then it is logically inferred that historians must set up or manipulate these events
GESHICHTE is
NOT TENABLE.
The second, "Historie" refers to attempts or efforts of historians to account only for those facts or events that have meaning to us.
The second, "Historie" refers to attempts or efforts of historians to account only for those facts or events that have meaning to us.
Bultmann argues that
historie
is possible and it is the most accessible thing the historians can make.

Man should give
more importance to events
that had happened in his lifetime (historie) than highlighting event that cannot help him grow and maximize his potentials.
We cannot undo our past.
This Diagram can give us a better view of the different insights on history.
HISTORY
(Heideggerian
view)
Historicality:
Interpretation/understanding of happenings
Historicity:
Happenings that occur in one's life.
HISTORY
(Bultmann's
view)
Geshichte:
Accounts history according to how facts/events have occurred.
Historie:
Accounts only the meaningful parts of events/happenings in history
