Transcript of Similes, Metaphors, & Personification

Guess the simile, based on the images:

A comparison of two unlike things is indicated by the use of "like," "as," or "than."
An inanimate object or an abstract idea is spoken of as though it is alive or has human attributes.
Now it's your turn!
1. Confer with your partner about favorite musical artists.

2. Start hunting through your favorite songs to find an example of each type of figurative language.

3. Write down the similes, metaphors, & personification you find.
When one kind of thing is applied to
another, noticeably different thing.

The comparison will help the reader better understand the first object by comparing it to something else
"My Love is like a red, red rose"
He is as tall as a tree.
Think about it like a direct comparison without like or as

Life is a roller coaster
"My rhymes are like shot clocks,
interstate cops
and blood clots,
my point is your flow gets stopped."
-Talib Kweli, Black Star,
"Hater Players"
"Me without a mic is like a beat without a snare...
I'm sweet like licorice, dangerous like syphilis."
-Lauryn Hill, Fugees,
"How Many Mics"

"Globe travelling, throwing
your verse like a javelin"
-Black Thought, The Roots,
"100% Dundee"
"Speech is my hammer,
bang the world into
-Mos Def, "Hip Hop"
"When I'm writing,
I'm trapped in between the lines
I escape, when I finish the rhyme."
-Rakim, "I Know You Got Soul"
She has a heart of gold.

The stars danced in the sky.
The sun smiled down at me.
"Dry leaves on the ground
Lookin' past the tree to
the blue sky askin':
'Why me?'"
-Blu, "Amnesia"
"I seen some cold nights and bloody days
They grab me and bullets spray"
-Nas, "I Gave You Power"

This type allows something that
is unreal to become more real
for the reader.
