Humans have studied and praised rhetoric since the early days of the written word. The Mesopotamians and Ancient Egyptians both valued the ability to speak with passion and wisdom. It wasn't until the rise of Greek democracy that rhetoric became a high art that was studied and developed systematically.

Definition of Rhetoric
The art or science of all specialized literary uses of language in prose or verse, including the figures of speech and uses of written, spoken and visual language.
While the great philosopher Aristotle criticized the Sophists’ misuse of rhetoric, he did see it as a useful tool in helping audiences see and understand truth. In his treatise, The Art of Rhetoric, Aristotle established a system of understanding and teaching rhetoric.. Aristotle's Rhetoric has had such a huge influence on the development of the art of rhetoric. The famous Roman teachers of rhetoric, such as Cicero and Quintilian, frequently used elements stemming from the Aristotelian doctrine.

where did rhetoric come from?
The earliest known studies of rhetoric come from the Golden Age, when philosophers of ancient Greece discussed logos, ethos, and pathos.
Rhetoric began as a civic art in Ancient Greece where students were trained to develop tactics of oratorical persuasion, especially in legal disputes. Rhetoric originated in a school of pre-Socratic philosophers known as the Sophists circa 600 BC.
