So is it in trouble?

So what's being done?

Yes. Some threats include:

  • Watershed partnerships help preserve the land
  • Outplanting/reforestation
  • Controlling ungulates/invasive species
  • Critical habitats to preserve biodiversity
  • Restoration
  • Maintenance
  • Protecting endangered species
  • Maintaining ecosystems

Wetlands

  • An area where the soil is often saturated with water. Water may be standing on the surface for part or nearly all of the year.

  • Watersheds drain to a common waterway, like a creek or stream, which then drains to a larger waterway, like the ocean.
  • Typically near lakes, creeks, etc.

Watersheds Vs Wetlands

What is the difference?

  • Wetlands are the link between watersheds and that larger body of water

Criteria for Classification

U.S Fish and Wildlife Service

Any of these three characteristics:

  • at least periodically, the land supports predominantly hydrophytes
  • the substrate is predominantly undrained hydric soil
  • the substrate is saturated with water or covered by shallow water at some time during the growing season of each year.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (responsible for enforcing federal laws that protect wetlands)

  • Must have all three of those attributes

  • Pollution
  • Mammals with hooves
  • Introduced/invasive species
  • Or, diseases, pests
  • Fire
  • Development

And here we go!

First things first...

What is a watershed?

Well, class...

  • Watershed: land/area that collects the rainwater and brings it to a common place
  • In places like Hawaii, the rain ultimately ends up in the ocean.
  • What about Milan?

So let's just talk about part of the "around and around and around"

But Mrs. Frizzle, why does this matter?

Let's start at the beginning...

In other words, it's an important part of the water cycle that allows us and other species to exist/thrive with a supply of clean, fresh water.

The Watershed Itself

I think it's time for a field trip!

  • After it rains, the rain the flows down from places that are above sea level
  • The fresh water flows down into other lakes, rivers, and the ocean

All aboard!

It's also culturally significant

  • The watershed and the land in general are valued traditionally
  • Watershed projects through Historic Hoosier Hills RC&D work to protect the watershed

A bit of what they all do

  • Flow of fresh, clean H2O
  • Protects people from disease
  • Protects the ocean
  • Controls erosion and run-off
  • Lakes/rivers, fish, recreation, coral reefs
  • Habitat
  • Endemic species
  • Global Warming
  • Absorbs CO2
