By: Bill Miller Theme Map Chapters 1-4 Lesson/Theme: Once things are in the past there is no way to change them Lesson/Theme: Learning to be confident but humble Lesson/Theme: True friends want the best for one another Chapters 5-7 Chapter 8-11 Quote: "It would be suicidal; it was simply not an option. If McCandless had walked a mile or so upstream, he would have discovered that the river broadened into a maze of braided channels"(170). Lesson/Theme: Every decision has consequences Quote:"But he didn't, and there is no way to bring him back. You can't fix it. Most things you can fix but not that"(203). Quote: "Alex admitted that the only food in his pack was at ten-pound bag of rice. His gear seemed exceedingly minimal for the harsh conditions of the interior, which in April still lay buried under the winter snowpack"(5). How the quote shows the theme: This quote shows that Chris really wants to go off into the wild and is confident in his ability to survive the harsh conditions. But he learns that he has to be humble about his knowledge of the area because when he admits to Gallien that he doesn't have the best gear he gets a pair of boots and food which help him out in the long run. “Every person that you meet knows something you don't; learn from them.”
H. Jackson Brown Jr. This connects because it is a famous quote saying exectly what Chris did and that he did in fact learn from Gallien. Quote: "My point is that you do not need me or anyone else around to bring this new light in your life. It is simply waiting out there for you to grasp it, and all you have to do is reach for it"(57-58). How the quote shows the theme: Chris is talking to Ron Franz who is looking to fill the void of his lost son with Chris McCandless in order to find joy. Chris became good friends with Ron and so he tells him that joy shouldn't come from filling that void, but that it is out there for him to find because Chris knows this will be best for Ron and bring him true happiness. “A friend is one that knows you as you are, understands where you have been, accepts what you have become, and still, gently allows you to grow.”
William Shakespeare This connects to the theme because it shows how Chris and Ron are really friends because they accept the lives the other leads while also hoping to enhance the others life with their friendship Lesson/Theme: When faced with difficult circumstances people find out who they really are inside Quote:" 'Dear God in Heaven, please forgive me my weakness and my sins. Please look over my family.' And then he reclined in his wall tent, placed the muzzle of the .30-.30 against his head, and jerked his thumb down on the trigger"(84). How this quote shows the theme: Carl McCunn went off into the wild of Alaska looking for a challenge and he thought he could survive but in the end he killed himself because he realized he didn't have what it took to survive. Chris showed that he was stronger mentally than McCunn but in the end just as unprepared. If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put foundations under them. – Henry David Thoreau This connects to the theme because the quote is saying that you should dream big and challenge yourself, but that it is important to be able to support those dreams. When you are faced with too tough of a challenge you will see that you didn't have the foundation, but hopefully you will learn from it and do better next time. How this quote shows the theme: Chris was unprepared when he entered the wilderness of Alaska and that was a poor decision. As a consequence he traps himself in the wild with his lack of knowledge and eventually dies. As he grows weaker he realizes more and more that his lack of preparation came back to him and led to his demise. “The law is simple. Every experience is repeated or suffered till you experience it properly and fully the first time.”
― Ben Okri This quote connects to the theme because it says that every thing we do has a consequence and we must learn from the consequences or suffer until we do. In Chris's case he did not have a chance to learn from his mistake because he died from the consequences. How this quote shows the theme: Chris made a decision to leave for the wild and died there. He can not come back and now his family has to live their lives without him. Chris did not really learn this lesson because he died, but the book teaches this lesson to the reader. “You must learn some of my philosophy. Think only of the past as its remembrance gives you pleasure.”
Jane Austen This quote connects to the lesson because it teaches a lesson about the lesson. We must remember the good things in life because the past can not be changed.
