John Green The desire to matter, to make a mark on the world and to be someone special CHARACTERIZATION CONFLICT A. Colin Singleton

1. Quote: "The problem exactly is that she dumped me. That I’m alone. Oh my God, I'm alone again. And not only that, but I'm a total failure in case you haven't noticed. I'm washed up, I'm a former. Formerly the boyfriend of Katherine XIX. Formerly a prodigy. Formerly full of potential. Currently full of shit." (Colin 10)

a. Connect to element - reveals how the main character is. He has just been dumped by his last girlfriend and he’s depressed thinking that he’s alone because he’s a failure, not only as a guy that can’t keep a relationship with a girl more than a few months, but also as a man because he’s a prodigy, but he will never be a genius,

b. Connect to theme – because he clearly has problems of self-confidence everytime something wrong he didn’t expect to happen, happens. And that’s why he’s “obsessed” with the fact of mattering, he wants to be someone special and he won’t be able to do it if all of his girlfriends keep breaking with him or if he’s never gonna be a genius. A. Colin Singleton

1.Quote – “What is the point of being alive if you don’t at least try to do something remarkable? How very odd, to believe God gave you life, and yet not think that life asks more of you than watching TV.” (Colin 33)

a. Connects to element- his point of view is always trying to do something useful to reinvent oneself, for example, him, he’s on a mission to prove the theorem of “Underlying Katherine Predictability” which he hopes will predict the future of any relationship, avenge dumpees everywhere, and finally win the girl.

b.Connect to theme – relates to the theme as the quote shows how Colin cares about always doing something in your life, not wasting it watching TV the whole day just like Hassan does. A. Man v Man

1. Quote – “Dude, you're such a geek. And that's coming from an overweight Star Trek fan who scored a 5 on the AP Calculus test. So you know your condition is grave” (Hassan)

a. Connects to element – because there’s an argument between Colin and his best friend, Hassan calls him geek and a fight goes on.

b. Connects to the theme – because Hassan thinks that he’s way too obsessed with his mathematical theorem, which his goal is to predict how long will his relationships last, and to win the girl, that way he will finally matter to someone for real. AN ABUNDANCE OF KATHERINES light, humorous and intellectual Colin Singleton has had 19 girlfriends. All of them where named Katherine. And all of them dumped him. In the wake of The K-19 Debacle, Colin–an anagram-obsessed washed-up child prodigy–heads out on a road trip with his overweight, Judge Judy- loving friend Hassan. With 10,000 dollars in his pocket and a feral hog on his trail, Colin is on a mission to prove a mathematical theorem he hopes will predict the future of any relationship (and conceivably win the girl). Their road trip leads them to the grave of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and a quirky town with a mission to save the local tampon string factory. And there’s a girl, but her name isn’t Katherine. B. Lindsey Lee Wells

2. Quote – “It's just that I learned a while ago that the best way to get people to like you is not to like them too much.” (Lindsey)

a. Connect to element – shows that Lindsey had lived something bad that marked herself which helped her to be stronger now. She pretends to be strong by her personality but the ones that seem stronger, are the weaker. She’s a static character because even if she changed since she had this bad experience, this experience will last forever in her mind so she will not be able to develop.

b.Connect to theme – because it’s always the fact of mattering, and the first and best way to reach this is getting people to know you and like you. According to her, if you want people to like you, don’t like them too much, which shows that she had passed for some bad or sad experience to like someone too much and now she’s advising Colin to not making the same mistake she did. Point of view B.Colin’s friends

2.Quote – “Because you're only thinking they-might-not-like-me-they-might-not-like-me, and guess what? When you act like that, no one likes you.” (Hassan)

a. Connect to element – he thinks what Colin is trying to prove about his theory on relationships stupid cause even if he wasn’t lucky on his old relationships, you can’t predict how long they will take, not even the mathematic power can beat love.

b. Connect to theme– I would relate it to the theme saying that if you really wanna matter, start by believing in yourself, that’s ALL what really matters. And just after that, when you realize you’re someone special, then you’ll start making marks on the world B. Man v self

2. Quote – “And yes, again, that was it exactly. A retyper and not a writer. A prodigy and not a genius.”

a. Connects to element – because there’s always this conflict with himself for not being a genius. By this quote, he says that he always get what is under the thing he really wants, he hasn’t reached to be a writer, just a retyper, he hasn’t reached to be a genius, but just a prodigy.

b .Connects to the theme – as he will never be someone special, someone that make a mark on the world if he can’t achieve his final goal, to be a genius, as well as having his “Eureka moment”.
