Slope
The slope is measured with the formula: Rise/Run, which can be found out by finding two point of the slope, and using this formula: y2-y1/x2-x1. Slope is represented by the letter m in math. The slope describes the steepness and direction of the slope. A vertical slope has all the x points the same, which means the denominator is 0, so the slope is undefined. A horizontal slope is when all the y points are equal, so the numerator is 0, and the slope is called a zero slope.
Vertical Drop
Skiers like to know the vertical drop of the mountain, which is how tall the mountain is. It is calculated by subtracting the base of the mountain to the peak. Each lift has its vertical drop, and to find out how many feet in altitude a skier has traveled in a day, you need to add up all the vertical drops of the lifts the skier took.
Angles in slope
The slope can be measured by angles too. A 90 degree slope, which is extremely rare, would be impossible to ski because the skis would glide off and you would fall in the snow. It is more difficult when the slope and angle are higher. Beginner slopes are called "Greens", and are for anyone. Those who want to get into a little steeper, do the intermediate trails called "Blues". Advanced skiers would do "Black Diamonds", which can be challenging, and the most advanced of them all, "Double Black Diamonds", which can be very steep. Some slopes that aren't steep may have be advanced because of glades (woods), ice, or obstacles like rocks and branches.
Angles in Gliding/Digging
Digging in the snow is important to maintain your speed but also to go faster. When turning, the skis enter the snow at a certain angle, and knowing the angle can help go fast without falling. Staying on your edges and a good angle while turning can help go very fast when alpine skiing. Beginners go across the slope, and when turning the put their skis at a very low angle into the snow, causing them to go very slow. It is also important to put the body at a certain angle to go faster. You need to bend the knees, and slightly lean forward, and use your arms and poles to balance yourself.
Skiing is a winter sport than can be practiced in 2 ways:
Alpine
: Alpine skiing is a form of racing going downhill in which there are gates and the goal is to go around the gates as fast as possible
Freestyle
: Freestyle skiing includes aerial, half-pipe, moguls, and more. Aerial is judge based on jump takeoff (20%), jump form (50%) and landing (30%). Moguls are a series a bumps in which the goal is to get down the fastest. Snowboards are also commonly used for freestyle.
