Transcript of POINSETTIAS

Poinsettias are euphorbia pulcherrima
They are native to Mexico
These plants are sold at Christmas time because they only bloom then
Poinsettias are not poisonous, you'd have to eat 500 to 600 leaves
They Lactate
Poinsettias lactate a latex that is sticky. It is controversial whether people with latex allergies will react to the latex that is produced by the plant.
The yellow part in the middle of the plant is actually the flower, the leaves are bracts and they turn colors when close to Christmas, but they have to have a 12 hour darkness period for their color to set in before they are sold.
Poinsettias are photoperiodic plants, which means that their flower depends if it is a short day or a long day. Poinsettias are long day plants; they also will not flower if they're in your kitchen in the wintertime.
Poinsettia Care
1. Poinsettias should last 6-8 weeks during the holiday season
2. Keep them inside during drafts
3. Don't put them under a vent or near a heating duct
4. Water them moderately, don't under or overwater them
Poinsettia Pests
1. Whiteflies
2. Mealy Bugs
3. Fungus Gnats
4. Spider Mites
5. Thrips
These pests can be eliminated through spraying or IPM
Other Facts
There are over 100 varieties of poinsettias
Red Poinsettia domiantes over other colors
They are the best selling potted plant in the US
More than 65 million were sold nationwide last year
Poinsettia Pinching
For a 6 inch plant, pinch to 6-8 nodes, a node is a place where a leaf and stem meet. If you didn't pinch a poinsettia, it would be very tall, spindly, with few flowers.
Pesticides for Poinsettias
Poinsettias require an IPM program
Apply a systematic pesticide to control a wide spectrum of pests
Keep scouting or monitoring for pests and treat them as they arise
To avoid pest problems, keep the greenhouse clean
Don't overwater and space plants far enough apart to prevent fungal prroblems
How to Pot Up Poinsettias
1. Get your poinsettia cutting
2. Pot in a round, azalea pot
3. Fill it with potting soil
4. Fill container with soil even to the top
5. Put the plug in the soil, so that the crown is level with the surrounding potting soil
6. Water and fertilize the poinsettia
