This is What it Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona
Character Change
Victor and Thomas decide they are going to throw Victors dad's ashes into the river and he will rise like a salmon (74).
"Victor was ashamed of himself. Whatever happened to the tribal ties?" (74).
Empathy
The author uses character change to make us evaluate our lives in a new way.
Throughout this short story, Sherman Alexi makes us empathize with the main character, Victor.
Victor's father died and he wanted to go get his ashes from Phoenix.
Victor didn't have
enough money to
get to Phoenix.
"Just Victor lost his job, he also found out that his father had died of a heart attack" (59).
"Victor didn't have any money" (59).
Victor is apologizing for something he did as a kid. When they first left, Victor wouldn't even talk to Thomas. This makes me think how have I hurt friends in the past.
Knowing that Victor's father died and that he wants to go see him from Phoenix but doesn't have enough money to go there makes you empathize with him. You feel bad for Victor but you also understand what its like to not have money.
This shows that Victor cares about his dad. In the beginning Victor was only going to Phoenix to get the pickup and money. This makes me wonder if I use some people just for material gain.
Conclusion
Victor has realized he has been unfair to Thomas and wants to change that. That inspires me to treat my friends with respect and fix ruined relationships.
