Transcript of Jeans
Natalie Tesch and Emma Laabs
In 1853, Levi Strauss,a 24 year old German immigrant, left New York with intentions of starting a dry goods business in San Francisco. He was selling canvas and a prospector said, "You should have brought pants." Pants, at the time, weren't strong enough to last a long time. Levi was inspired to create mens pants that would last through work. At first they were overalls. Miners liked the pants, but they tended to chafe. Levi changed the fabric to a French cloth called serge de nimes, later known as denim. The pants were nicknamed blue jeans and officially patent on May 20th, 1873. They were not popular at first, it took almost a hundred years for them to hit the market.
The first styles were indigo blue and brown. The brown was dropped out shortly after
Loose blue overalls were worn by workers and mostly miners.
Late 1800s-Early 1900s
Women didn't usually wear jeans. In 1935 womens jeans were featured in Vogue
In the 1960s, jeans were still high waisted. There was a little flare at the bottom of the jeans. More colors became popular, such as green, white and gray.
Bell bottoms became very popular, along with more patterns, and more colors. Pants were still high waisted.
Jeans got skinnier. Also Jean jackets and jean shirts were popular. People went back to wearing navy blue and pants weren't as high waisted.
In the 1990s the jeans were lighter and looser but skinny jeans were also coming into style at this time.
It was popular to roll the bottoms of the jeans up. If girls wore jeans it was considered rebellious. Most jeans were high waisted.
Now jeans are skinny and form fitting. People wear all different styles and different colors.
It revolutionized styles all over the world. Girls stopped wearing dresses and skirts everyday, and started wearing pants. Girls are comfortable and casual. Also, people can have pants that won't get wrecked right away if you work in them.
Why was it important and why is it significant?
