Transcript of Parts and Functions of a Laptop

Ports
Ports are openings on the sides of laptops available to the user to plug things into. These ports can be available for USB cords, headphones, microphones,VGA Connectors, ExpressCards, HDMI cords, Memory Card Readers, Modem Ports and more or less depending on the laptop model.
AC (Alternating Current) Adapter
Known as the “charger” to many people, the AC adapter charges the computer’s battery. An AC adapter is only for portable computers.
LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) Screen
Parts and Functions of a Laptop
Webcam for short, the web camera is a small, usually circular, camera at the top of the LCD screen on a computer. The camera can be used for taking pictures or for use during video calls using programs such as
Skype
or
Google Hangouts
.
Web Camera
Touchpad
Most commonly found on laptops, the touchpad is a multi-sensing “mouse” that allows the user to scroll down web pages by clicking the scroll bar and sliding their finger down, and click things by pressing at the bottom of the pad.
Keyboard
The keyboard is the most common human data input method and command center. Keyboards are usually part of newer models of computers such as laptops.
The LCD screen is acts as the monitor for laptops and other portable devices. For desktop computers, their screens are made out of CRT (cathode ray tubes.)

Motherboard
The motherboard is the computer's main circuit board. It's a thin plate that holds the CPU; memory connectors for the hard drive and optical drives; expansion cards to control the video and audio; as well as connections to your computer's ports (such as the USB ports). The motherboard connects directly or indirectly to every part of the computer.
The RAM is your system's short-term memory. Whenever your computer performs calculations, it temporarily stores the data in the RAM until it is needed.

RAM (Random Access Memory)
CPU (Central Processing Unit)
The CPU, also called the processor, spreads information and tells the computer what to do.
Hard Drive
The computer’s hard drive contains memory to save information. It's where your software, documents, and other files are stored. The hard drive is long-term storage, which means the data is still saved even if you turn the computer off or unplug it.
Video Graphics Card
The video card is responsible for what you see on the monitor. Most computers have a GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) built into the motherboard, instead of having a separate video card.
Battery
If charged enough by the laptop’s AC adapter, the battery allows the user to use the laptop when it's not plugged in. Only non-Apple computers have visible/removable batteries.
Screen/Video Cable
The screen/video cable transfers data signals from the motherboard and video graphics card to the LCD screen. Most video cables supply high voltage DC (direct current) power to the screen inverter.

Sound Card
The sound card, also called an audio card, is responsible for what you hear in the speakers or headphones.
Wireless Network Card
The network card allows your computer to communicate over a network and access the internet. It can either connect with an Ethernet cable or through a wireless connection (often called Wi-Fi). Many motherboards have built-in network connections, and a network card can also be added to an expansion slot.
Optical Disc Drive
Optical disc drives retrieve and/or store data on discs like CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs, all of which hold much more information than classic portable media options like the floppy disk.
Display Hinges
The display hinges are what connect the LCD screen to the rest of the laptop computer.
RTC / CMOS Battery
Any laptop computer has a RTC (Real Time Clock) or CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor) battery. The RTC battery connects directly to the laptop system board and helps to retain important BIOS settings such as system time, date, BIOS configuration while the laptop is turned off or even when the main battery is removed.
BIOS (Basic Input Output System)
The BIOS is the program a personal computer's microprocessor uses to get the computer system started after you turn it on. It also manages data flow between the computer's operating system and attached devices such as the hard disc, video adapter, keyboard, mouse, and printer.

Power Supply Unit
The power supply unit converts the power from the wall outlet to the type of power needed by the computer. It's the rectangular block attached to the cord on most AC adapters. It sends power through the cables to the motherboard and other components.
