Because a large proportion of the area that is being illuminated is reflecting directly into the camera ...
This is the most common illumination technique.
Object plane
The light enables the camera to look at the object in the same axis as the light.
It does this by using a 50% silvered mirror/beam splitter to reflect the light onto the object
The flat dome technology in CCS' "LFX Series" has the benefits of all the configurations you've just seen...
Light is scattered across a template that sits on top of a diffusor.
... but wait,
there's more!

... the LFX can be used as illumination for two cameras !
In this configuration, light is reflected off the internal walls of a dome, down onto the object.
(hence the name!)
(while the camera looks through it)
The light is aimed directly at the object
(and can create very pronounced shadows).
Why is it called "bright field"?
... it is the "bright" region in the field of view.
(depending on which template is used)
... resulting in either homogeneous, diffuse illumination or a lined pattern.
This is directed down onto the surface of the object ...
(AKA DOAL - diffused on-axis light)
Although it provides even, diffused illumination across most of the object, there is one area that's not ...
Hole for camera
The aperture for the camera.
To help resolve this, a coaxial light (like you saw earlier) is attached to the top of it
(It's slightly darker)
Providing even, diffuse, illumination across the whole object.
(This configuration is called a "Cloudy Day Illuminator")
