In an attempt to stay away from war with Mexico, Van Buren disapproved the idea of accepting Texas into statehood. He also stopped a possible war over Canada. There was a spot of land that didn't necessarily belong to either Canada or America. This piece of land was between Maine and New Brunswick; both sides wanted it. Van Buren did not want a war with Great Britian, so he made a truce and both sides withdrew their troops in 1839.
This picture shows President Andrew Jackson carrying Martin Van Buren into the capitol building. This is because Jackson helped Van Buren with basically everything. Jackson elected Van Buren vice-president and helped him get elected president in 1837.

Van Buren was blamed by some people for the panic of 1837 because it began just after he was elected. In response to the worst depression the US had seen, Van Buren refused to make a new national bank. The Whig party thought that if the country opened a national bank once again, the US would come out of its economic slump. Instead, Van Buren suggested that the federal government transfer their funds from the state banks, where they were at the time, to an "independant treasury. This didn't really help and the depression went on for years.
