SYMBOL
The symbol that represents Jim Hawkins is a lion because a lion symbolizes courage and bravery. Jim Hawkins always shows his courage and bravery when he needs to prove something or get his way in something. For example Jim shows his bravery when he told Israel that if he's going to kill Captain Smollet he has to kill him first even though he's terrified of having a gun pointed to his head.
QUOTES
-In the begging of the novel Jim Hawkins wasn't mature.
-After his father's passing there were responsibilities put on him
- He realized how important his decisions were and started handling conflict in a mature manner.
-He was also told by Silver that people's lives depend on his decisions.
1st Argument
Jim is a clever/smart teenager. For example, when Jim was having a conversation with Long John Silver about the crew men, Jim put out a statement which shows he is very clever.
“’ with some people it’s better keep them under your eye then out of your sight.”’ (Stevenson 65)
Another example is when Jim found the map that lead to the Treasure Island that crew mates had been seeking for many years. Gozo, and Dr. Livesey were suggesting that Jim should tell their crew mates, but Jim made a smarter decision by saying they should keep their discovery of the map a secret
“’ say I know what’s happening here. You chaps are planning to sail to this island, aren’t you? To dig up this
treasure?”’ (Stevenson 72) Jim replies, “’ yes, but we must be quiet about it.”’ (Stevenson 72)
Lastly, Jim shows that he is clever/smart when he was having a serious conversation with Long John Silver. They were talking about their crew mates, Jim shows he is clever because his crew mates get into conflicts because of other mates while they are trying to help each other, and Jim cancels himself out which keeps him out of the conflicts because he only worries about what he wants or should do.
“’ every man seeks wealth in his own way.”’ (Stevenson 86)
2nd THESIS STATEMENT
3rd Argument
Jim is still young, but after his father’s death, Jim became more mature and started handling conflicts more wisely.
“’ do you think you could cope with killin’, Jim?”’ (Stevenson 123) Jim replied, “’ I could cope”’ (Stevenson 123) in a very serious tone.
Another example is; Jim use to bully a boy who took his job at the inn, but later after Jim’s father’s death Jim stopped bullying the boy because he realized he should be more mature with situations like this and also realized he was not indispensable there anymore.
“Jim bullies the boy who had taken his job even after he was told never to come back.” (Stevenson 146)
Lastly, Jim became more mature throughout the book because of all the responsibilities of his dad that were put on him after his father’s passing.
“’ it was Silver’s voice, before I had heard a dozen words, I would not have shown myself for an the world, but lay there, trembling and listening, in the extreme of fear and curiosity, for from these dozen words I understood that the lives of all depend upon me alone.”’ (Stevenson 155)
2nd Argument
Jim is a boy who gets frightened by many little things, most people wouldn’t find frightening, he shows his courage very well. An example of when Jim was courageous is when, Jim was actually really afraid of having a gun being pointed to his head by Silver but Jim still shows courage and bravery by standing up and telling Silver how he actually felt.
“’ kill Captain Smollett, and you’ll have to kill me.”’ (Stevenson 97)
Another time Jim showed he had a lot of courage is when Jim knew Israel was close to killing him, but Jim tried his best by threatening him, which resulted in his life being saved.
“’ not another step! One more step Mr. Hands, and I’ll blow your brains out!”’ (Stevenson 109)
Lastly, Jim shows his courage when needed but also gets frightened. Jim witnessed a tragic murder of a crew man by silver. After seeing the murder right before his eyes he was scared and almost fainted.
“When Jim witnessed Silvers of the crew man Tom, Jim nearly fainted after bursting into tears.” (Stevenson 112)
QUOTE
" if you do not put that knife in your pocket this instant, you shall hang in the next assizes." (Stevenson 56)
INTRODUCTION
Have you ever thought how you would feel if you if your father un-expectedly gets murdered? Jim Hawkins is the protagonist in the book called Treasure Island written by Robert Louis Stevenson.
Thesis Statement: Jim Hawkins is a person to admire because he is clever/smart, he has much more courage than any teenager today would have even though he gets frightened very easily, lastly, Jim is more mature than he was before he had to go through some of the most the depressing times in his life.
1st THESIS STATEMENT
CONCLUSION
Jim Hawkins is a person to admire because throughout the book he changed into a different person as he went through depressing and amazing times. He shows that he is clever, while handling complex situations, more courageous than he was before his
father’s tragic passing, and very mature for his age because of the events he had to face right before his eyes. Jim could have saved his father from being murdered, but he would have stayed the same immature person he was before. I think everything happens for a reason because the change Jim Hawkins experienced was a good change that would only do him good in the future.
QUOTE
"Keep your fears to yourself, but share your courage with others." (Stevenson 126)
QUOTE
" That was Flint's treasure that we had come so far to seek, and that had cost already the lives of seventeen men from the Hispaniola." (Stevenson 123)
ESSAY
Jim and the sea men who didn't join the mutiny and lived finally reach England. The remaining of the mutiny head towards South America on their ship.
QUOTE
"I deny your right ... and saying there was the sort of man that made England terrible at sea". (Stevenson 276)
Jim and the pirates discover that the treasure has previously excavated from its burial area.
The falling action consists of the return trip to England and Silver's sneaky escape with the portion he had stolen from the treasure, and Jim's nightmares about the sea.
QUOTE
"You cannot run away from a weakness, you must sometimes fight it out or perish. And if that be so, why not now and where you stand." (Stevenson 123)
There are many points for the rising action including when the treasure map in the inn was first discovered, the voyage to the Treasure Island, and Silver's mutiny initiating and finally getting Jim to be kidnapped by the mutiny.
