Tone and Mood
"Monster" by Skillet
"Blown Away" Carrie Underwood
Let's Examine Tone and Mood in Music
Tone:
Tone is simply the author's attitude toward the subject.
Got a problem?
You can recognize the
tone/attitude
by the
language/word
choices that the author uses.
The author's language will reveal his/her opinion (positive or negative) about the subject.
Tone
MUST BE INFERRED
through use of descriptive words.
What creates a writer's Tone?

Diction:
Word Choice--connotation vs. denotation
Imagery:

what picture does the writing bring to mind? (colors, weather, use of light, and darkness)
Characterization: What message is the writer sending through the characters' actions, reactions, thoughts, speech, physical description?
Plot: What feelings are created through different events?
Theme: Author's message; what is the main point?
Let's Practice:

The girls were playing in the pond, splashing each other and trying to catch fish with their hands. They were having fun, but kept looking over their shoulders at the
looming
forest. The long grass of the field kept moving and they sort of felt like they were
being watched
...About a half hour passed and still the girls kept checking the field for movements. It seemed like a
pair of

dark eyes was on them.
They even considered going back inside, but that would mean homework time. So they continued splashing, but with
caution
now. Their eyes hardly left the field.
What is the TONE of this passage?

Ominous--suggesting fear or threat. Words like
"caution, dark, and looming"
help to reveal the author's tone.
You Try:

Finally, one of the girls pointed to the grass and giggled. "Meow!" A cat sat on the edge of the field and licked its paw. They did indeed have company. The girls ran over to the cat to pet his belly. They laughed as the cat sauntered back to the field.
What is the tone of this passage? What words did you look at to help you determine the tone?

MOOD:

The
overall feelings
or emotions that are created IN THE READER!
Atmosphere is another word for mood. It's creating a sense of expectation for what is to follow.
Authors "move" their readers'
moods
through their choice of words and level of detail.
Mood Example:
After New Year's the time came to put all the decorations away and settle in for the long, cold winter. The house seemed to sigh as we boxed up its finery. The tree was dry and brittle, and now waited forlornly by the side of the road to be picked up.

Monster lyrics
The secret side of me I never let you see
I keep it caged, but I can't control it
So stay away from me, the beast is ugly
I feel the rage and I just can't hold it

It's scratching on the walls, in the closet, in the halls
It comes awake, and I can't control it
Hiding under the bed, in my body, in my head
Why won't somebody come and save me from this, make it end?

I feel it deep within, it's just beneath the skin
I must confess that I feel like a monster
I hate what I've become, the nightmare's just begun
I must confess that I feel like a monster

I, I feel like a monster
I, I feel like a monster

My secret side I keep hid under lock and key
I keep it caged, but I can't control it
'Cause if I let him out he'll tear me up, break me down
Why won't somebody come and save me from this, make it end?

I feel it deep within, it's just beneath the skin
I must confess that I feel like a monster
I hate what I've become, the nightmare's just begun
I must confess that I feel like a monster

I feel it deep within, it's just beneath the skin
I must confess that I feel like a monster
I, I feel like a monster
I, I feel like a monster

It's hiding in the dark, it's teeth are razor sharp
There's no escape for me, it wants my soul, it wants my heart
No one can hear me scream, maybe it's just a dream
Maybe it's inside of me, stop this monster

I feel it deep within, it's just beneath the skin
I must confess that I feel like a monster
I hate what I've become, the nightmare's just begun
I must confess that I feel like a monster

I feel it deep within, it's just beneath the skin
I must confess that I feel like a monster
I've gotta lose control, he something radical
I must confess that I feel like a monster

I, I feel like a monster
I, I feel like a monster
I, I feel like a monster
I, I feel like a monster

Dry lightning cracks across the skies
Those storm clouds gather in her eyes
Her daddy was a mean old mister
Mama was an angel in the ground
The weather man called for a twister
She prayed blow it down

There’s not enough rain in Oklahoma
To wash the sins out of that house
There’s not enough wind in Oklahoma
To rip the nails out of the past

[Chorus:]
Shatter every window 'til it’s all blown away,
Every brick, every board, every slamming door blown away
'til there’s nothing left standing,
Nothing left of yesterday
Every tear-soaked whiskey memory blown away,
Blown away

She heard those sirens screaming out
Her daddy laid there passed out on the couch
She locked herself in the cellar
Listened to the screaming of the wind
Some people called it taking shelter
She called it sweet revenge

[Chorus:]
Shatter every window 'til it’s all blown away,
Every brick, every board, every slamming door blown away
'til there’s nothing left standing,
Nothing left of yesterday
Every tear-soaked whiskey memory blown away,
Blown away

There’s not enough rain in Oklahoma
To wash the sins out of that house
There’s not enough wind in Oklahoma
To rip the nails out of the past

Shatter every window 'til it’s all blown away (blown away)
Every brick, every board, every slamming door blown away (blown away)
'til there’s nothing left standing,
Nothing left of yesterday (blown away)
Every tear-soaked whiskey memory blown away,

Blown away, blown away, blown away, blown away, blown away
