An Analysis of Alberto Rios's
"The Cities Inside Us"

design by Dóri Sirály for Prezi
The Cities Inside Us
Alberto Rios
We live in secret cities
And we travel unmapped roads.

We speak words between us that we recognize
But which cannot be looked up.

They are our words.
They come from very far inside our mouths.

You and I, we are the secret citizens of the city
Inside us, and inside us

There go all the cars we have driven
And seen, there are all the people

We know and have known, there
Are all the places that are

But which used to be as well. This is where
They went. They did not disappear.

We each take a piece
Through the eye and through the ear.

It's loud inside us, in here, and when we speak
In the outside world

We have to hope that some of that sound
Does not come out, that an arm

Does not reach out
In place of the tongue.
Structure of the poem:
"The cities inside us" is written in a first person point of view. It does not have a rhyme scheme because Rios wanted to show to everyone that there is no such thing as normal and that you are allowed to be a free person and express yourself however you may want, so he did the exact same with his poem. The poem does in fact have a Iambic Tetrameter, but the final line is Trimester.
Theme:
The theme of "The cities inside us " is that everyone is different, and matter how much we grow and change our memories and feelings will always play a role in the way we act. But no matter what happens to us we will always be the same person and hopefully these changes will not cause problems with old friends or new friends.
