What are "Sweatshops"
EPZs: export processing zones
By definitions: factories that break 2 or more labour laws
workplaces where workers are exploited
workers are forced to work long hours, given little pay, tiny working conditions, and abuse
Mostly found in parts of Asia, Africa, Central America & South America (3rd world counties)
Why do they exist?
Because of free trade economies, companies can keep costs low & make more profit
turn to countries with the lowest wages & human rights protections
factory owners bid over contracts with these corporations
companies can get away with violating labor laws
ex. wages and benefits, hours, child labour
Of 250 million children that work in sweatshops, the majority of them are found in Asia
Here's a scenario...
You are a company with factories in Canada, the USA, and Germany
Canadian workers: 800, each receive
American workers: 1450, each receive
German workers: 760, each receive

1450x$10.65 $15442.50
760x$12.45 $ 9462

2012 Sweatshop Controversy in China
in 2012, numerous colleges & universities in the city of Huai’an City forced undergrads to work for factories
those who didn't could not get their degree
Students were put into factories (such as Apple) and had to work there for long hours with breaks under 10 minutes
Were paid 1320 yuan ($210) per month, which was then reduced to 110 yuan ($18.00)
Living conditions were terrible; each dorm held at least ten workers
workers were exposed to various chemicals that could potentially affect their health
Nets had to be put up around the building to prevent workers from committing suicide
in 2010, 14 workers took their own lives by jumping

children end up working because their parents can't provide for the family alone
no time for school
hired because they work for less money and are less likely to complain about poor conditions

Women & Their Role in Factories

In Mexico & Central America, all female workers are required to take shots that prevent pregnancies to avoid paying them for maternity leave
Refusing to take birth control or getting pregnant will get them fired
Women are more prone to verbal, sexual, and physical abuse by their bosses than men
Human trafficking is more common among female workers and these people are put through slavery-like-conditions
It cost $5 to make 1 pair of Nike shoes, which then get sold for between $100-$180

avg price=($100+180)/2= $140

$140-$5= $135 profit

How do they get away with it?
Since sweatshops aren't actually owned by corporations, companies say they don't know about the violations of their factories
they have power over suppliers' working regulation
expect cheap merchandise= cuts in workers wages
More jobs are available for people who really need the money
In some countries, sweatshops have larger salaries than the other jobs available
Jobs are safer than most (farming, construction, prostitution, etc.)
Having sweatshops boosts the country's economy
Abuse workers & give little pay
Violate labor laws
Human trafficking
Hire children to work
On average, work 60-80 hours a week
The money they make can only provide workers with basic needs and nothing more
Solutions to Sweatshops
Prohibiting sweatshops would put millions out of work and out on the streets
Best solution would be to improve working conditions and have better salaries & benefits
Additionally, having more inspections of factories would insure that companies aren't violating any rules
Studies have shown that doubling the pay of workers would only raise product prices by 1.8%
This way, workers can keep their jobs and have decent pay as well as better work conditions

People who work in sweatshops are mistreated & exploited
Many companies manipulate laws to make as much profit as possible by placing factories in countries with a free-trade economy
Sweatshops play a crucial part in a country's economy
Getting rid of these sweatshops cannot solve the issue; it will only create more problems

On April 24, 2013, over 1000 people were killed from a collapsed building in Bangladesh
Is said to be the deadliest disaster in the garment industry
Five clothing factories were in the building
