Miles and Huberman (1994) present a graphic meaning of a case study by suggesting that it is like a circle with a heart in the middle (see Figure 5.1). The heart is the focus of the study, while the circle defines the edge or boundary of the case. What is beyond the edge or boundary will not be studied. In other words, to qualify as a case study, you have to state the boundary or delimit what you want to study. For example, you have to limit the number of people you intend to interview, you have to limit the amount of time you intend to spend. “If there is no end, actually or theoretically, to the number of people who could be interviewed or to observations that could be conducted, then the phenomenon is not bounded enough to qualify as a case (Merriam, 1998, p.28).

Adelman, Jenkins & Kemmis (1983)
--- “instance drawn from a class” .

MacDonald & Walker (1977)---
“the examination of an instance in action” .
“instance” which could a individual child in the classroom, a classroom of preschool children, a low achieving high school or a specific remedial programme in reading. An “instance” of the case is selected to study in depth because it is intrinsically interesting and the researcher who studies it seeks to get a full understanding of the phenomenon as possible (Merriam, 1998).

Yin (1994) ---
most appropriate in situations in which it is impossible to separate the phenomenon studied from its context (i.e. the child’s behaviour in relation to other children in the playground)

*
the case study method is adopted both in quantitative and qualitative research.
Case studies can be either a

single-case study
or a
multiple-case study.
According to Yin (1994),

*

single-case study
is ideal for studying unique or extreme cases, to confirm or challenge a theory or for cases where the researcher did not have access to before. However, the researcher should be careful not to misrepresent what was observed.

*
Multiple-case study
is more suited when the researcher is interested in using more than one case to gather data from various sources and draw conclusions from the facts. They serve to confirm or corroborate evidence which enhances validity of the study. Multiple-design cases may require more than one investigator and training may be required covering aspects such as the reason for the study, the type of evidence to collect and what variations might be expected.

What are the steps in using the case study method ?
STEP 1
a clear research focus

A Case Study on Consultation about Korean Language Class
-With Data of Clinical Supervision Cases of the Elementary Schools-
The need for study
Although the interest on class consulting is high due to the increase of necessity about improving class, it is not kept proper place in the school.
The opportunity to reflect on and analyze their effects on class consulting methods and procedures is needed to achieve the class consulting.
The purpose of study
Analyzing the problems, its causes and finding ways of class consulting, I would like to find way of spreading and settling the future class consulting.
Research questions
1) How do the teacher and consultant in the Korean language consulting process react each other?
2) What is the core contents covered in the Korean language consulting process and how are the methods and procedures done?
3) What are the problems and their causes in the Korean language consulting process and what are the implications for activation?

The method of study
1. The methods on study issues are to
interview
in writing to the teacher and

consultant
, to
collect related data
by conducting in-depth interviews according to the interview results.
2. We have to
observe and write
the entire process of class consulting,
record
the contents of agreement before and after class, and
make analysis material
after copying all the results.
3. Previous research establishes the basis for an analysis method based on class consulting partner and content, and
analyze
by the analysis list.
Besides we strive to have the validity and reliability of the study by analyzing the teaching and learning curriculum written by teachers, the consulting request, and results between consultant and teacher for data analysis.
Steps in using the case study method :

First, we have to use a variety of sources such as primary and secondary materials, etc.
Second, we must create the chain of evidence, a link among the research problem, the collected data, and derived conclusions.
Third, the case study draft report should be reviewed by the main sources of information.
First, it is necessary to record the research process in the document to allow others to follow the same prior studies.
Second, using a case study protocol described the problems in detail that can occur when documenting and creating a case study database can improve the reliability.
In order to overcome the reliability problem
In order to increase the relevance in the case study
