SENIOR PROJECT 2010 By: JAHDIRA CARTER Kickboxing and Self Defense History of Kickboxing What is Kickboxing? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Combat sport that combines traditional boxing with the kicking techniques of martial arts. Many people use kickboxing for many different reason; such as, sport, excrcise, and self defense It is important for every woman to learn self defense simply because they are thought to be the weaker sex. Kickboxing is relatively new to the Western part of the world and it's history can be traced back to ancient Asia
Original styles originated from Thailand, China, India and many other parts of the world. One of the earliest styles originated from Thailand in the form of Muay Boran. Japanese boxing promoter Osamu Noguchi created kickboxing in the 1950's in opposition of Muay Thai and karate. Origin of Kickboxing Some Muay Thai practitioners consider kickboxing a "watered down" version of Muay Thai The two sports are similar; however, in Thai Boxing, kicks below the belt are allowed as are strikes with knees and elbows. Thai Boxers Most of what is known about the early history of Thai Boxers comes from Burmese accounts of warfare between Myanmar during the 15th and 16th centuries. Nai Khanom Tom, Thailand's first famous boxer and a prisoner of war in Myanmar, gained his freedom by roundly defeating a dozen Burmese warriors before a Burmese court. To this day many martial art followers consider the Thai style the ultimate in hand to hand fighting. American Kickboxing A combat sport and a unique style of kickboxing Primary intention was to create a new kind of sport American karate experts arranged competitions that allowed full contact kicks and punches that had been banned in karate. Health and safety concerns The first event of American kickboxing was held on January 17, 1970; fighting were Joe Lewis vs. Greg Baines. American Sport Kickboxing American kickboxing is comprised of three to twelve rounds of action and lasts almost between two to three minutes depending on whether the opponents are professionals or amateur. One of the most important rules in American kickboxing is concerned with strikes where participants are permitted to strike their opponent with kicks and punches to the upper part of the body. Competitors are not allowed to strike with their knees, elbows and shins at any point. If a person strikes any of these body parts, he will lose points immediately or will end up in disqualification. Each match is based on a ten point system, in order to win the round a competitor must kick at least ten times to his opponent in each round. ? Cardiovascular Kickboxing American kickboxing is a well-known sport, but the most popular way of using kickboxing is for an excellent way to exercise or lose weight. Aerobic /Cardiovascular kickboxing Cardiovascular workout that is done because of it's many benefits to the body. Cardio kickboxing is a fitness program created by Frank Thiboutot at the Bay Club in Portland, Maine, in 1992 The original circuit training format The techniques used during the one-hour classes Taking Kickboxing Classes Taking kickboxing classed does not relatively mean that one is out of shape, many people do it because it keeps them looking good and feeling even better! Taking kickboxing classes may seem like no big deal but if you jump into it without knowing your current level of fitness and being too aggressive the first day, much harm can be done to the body. Even if you are in good shape it is best to take it easy until the body adapts to your new workout. When you start classes one should try looking for a beginner class, an introductory technique class, or a progressive class in which it teaches the basic moves, and do them until it is comfortable to do them at a moderate pace before putting them into fast combinations. Self Defense ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! To many people self defense is something like a karate kick to the groin or jan in the eyes of an attacker, but self defense actually means doing everything possible to avoid fighting someone who threatens or attacks. It's all about using smarts and not fists. One way to avoid a potential attack before it happens is to trust instincts and intuition, combined with common sense. A person who is smaller should consider carrying a small weapon such as pepper spray and teasers, which would be more affective rather than trying to kick or hit an attacker. Staticstics of attacks on women Statistics show that a woman now twenty one years-old has a one in four chance of experiencing a violent crime in her lifetime. knowing what your up against can lower your risk of being attacked. 17.6% of women in the United States have survived a completed or attempted rape, of these, 21.6% were youner than age twelve when they were first raped, and 32.4% were between the ages of twelve and seventeen. 67% of women who reported being raped, physically assaulted, and or stalked since age eighteen were victimized by a current or former husband, boyfriend, or date. Only half of domestic violence incidents are reported to police. Senior Project Experience :)
