Shel Silverstein began writing when he was twelve years old. Born in the lower middle class neighborhood of Palmer Square in Chicago,
Silverstein is best known as the author of iconic books of prose and poetry for young readers. Silverstein continued to churn out a mix of funny, philosophic children's books such as Where the Sidewalk Ends, The Giving Tree, and The Missing Piece, which made impressive sales.
