Jons Jacob Berzelius August 20, 1779- August 7, 1848 Born in Ostergotland (East Gothland) in Sweden He lost both parents at an early age, but was taken in by relatives Graduated as a M.D. in 1802 from Uppsala University Along with discovering selenium, he discovered silicon, thorium, and cerium The element of Selenium Was founded in 1817. Berzelius was studying chemicals with used in making sulfuric acid in a chemistry plant near Gripsholm. Among the chemicals he thought one material was the element tellurium. Berzelius took the material back to his own laboratory in Stockholm and found that it was not tellurium, similar to it, but a new element. The name 'Selenium' comes from the greek word 'selene' meaning moon.
