Transcript of Jay-Z
Shawn Carter, also know as Jay Z, was born on April 12, 1969, in Brooklyn, New York. Raised by single mother, Gloria Carter, Jay Z grew up with a hard lifestyle
While attending high school, he began exploring his rap skills. Struggling to get a record deal, Jay Z and a couple of his friends created their own independent label known as Roc-a-Fella Records later known as Def Jam Recordings.
He is now the second richest artist in hip hop. He is a fifteen time Grammy winner, has sold over 18 million albums worldwide, married the singer Beyonce', and has a daughter named Blue-Ivy
While writing his book, Decoded, Jay-Z came up with 17 rules on how to be a successful entrepreneur. In those 17 rules, some stand out on how he is a great leader.
"Without the work, the magic won't come."
Even though Jay-Z has had a hard life growing up, he uses that to work harder to reach his goal in the future. Instead of staying in drug dealing business he chose a different route, making music, and worked at it to become what he is today.
"We made short and long-term projections, we kept it realistic, but the thing is we wrote it down, which is as important as visualization in realizing success."
#8 Make a Plan
When Jay-Z and his friends found Roc-a-Fella Records they had to have a plan. They had to picture how they wanted their label to look to others in the future. They had to figure out what type of record label they wanted to be, what type of music they wanted to produce, and how they wanted others to relate to it. They took what they wrote down and made it happen.
"You can want success all you want, but to get it, you can't falter. You can't slip. You can't sleep. One eye open, for real, and forever."
#9 Don't take your eyes off the prize.
The ability to resist spending all your money in the music industry can be hard. So to stay focused one has to have a lot of passion. He did not let his change of lifestyle throw him off track. He stayed on top of what he needed to do to get to where he wanted to go.
"The only way to really win money is to hold it loosely-and be generous with it to accomplish things of value"
Generosity is something that comes from the heart and is executed in everyday life. Jay-Z once made a bet with Jermain Dupree on a basketball game and won. He then gave away the money he won to all of his fans at a show.
Jay-Z is a successful leader because he does not let the money and fame go to his head. He is grateful for the opportunities he has been given. Being generous also means putting people first. He puts his family and fans first, without a doubt, and also shares his knowledge and feelings with them through his gifts.
"I have inherited two of the most important brands in hip-hop, Def Jam and Roc-a-Fella. Reid and Universal Music Group have give me the opportunity to manage the companies I have contributed to my whole career. I feel this is a giant step for me and the entire artist community. "
Being one of the best rappers of his times comes with a lot of responsibilities. For one, he has his family- Beyonce and Blue Ivy. Even though Beyonce is more than capable of taking care of herself, Jay is still responsible for them.
He works hard and does what he has to to get any task put before him done. He strives for excellence, always changing and that is why he is so successful. He takes responsibility for his actions, regardless the circumstances of the situation.
"I was forced to be an artist and a CEO from the beginning, so I was forced to be like a business man because when I was trying to get a record deal, it was so hard to get a record deal on my own that it was either give up or create my own company."
Jay- Z deals with problems every day, from paparazzi to business; and with each one he stays calm and thinks logically to solve them. A great leader like him sees the big picture and is not overwhelmed by the emotions of it all.
"I invented SWAG."
There is probably no rapper who believes in their talent and flaunts it more than Jay-Z. His confidence when he performs, calling himself Hova, God MC, and just being himself, helped listeners draw themselves onto him. He can turn his story from dope boy to rap star into a phenomenon, all by how his words play off the microphone.
Beyonce and Jay Z first met when they collaborated on the track Bonnie and Clyde back in 2002.
Over the years they have became one of the most influential couples in hip-hop.
Beyonce and Jay-Z were listed as the most powerful couple for TIME magazine's 100 most influential people of 2006.
Forbes ranked them as Hollywood's top-earning couple in 2008 & 2009.
Growing up in Brooklyn, New York with three siblings and a single mother shaped Jay Z's character. He did not have a father figure to talk him through everything so he had to look for that figure somewhere else. He started selling drugs and was shot, however, he grew up and turned his life around. He started creating music. His high character is evident in being a excellent father, philanthropist, ad a sports executive.
One has to have a lot of courage to go through the things Jay Z went through and still decide to make his life better. Not all of his music did very well in the beginning but he still strives to produce some of the best-selling rap albums ever. His determination and never-quit mindset shows his courage.
While being a successful rapper, Jay Z also manages other successful rappers. He is the CEO of DEF Jam Records. To manage well-known artists, He has to be a good communicator.
"I want a relationship like Beyonce and Jay Z. People know about us, but they don't know our business. That's how relationships last."
Jay-Z grew up in a single parent household in the projects of Brooklyn with his three younger siblings.
Even though he didn't have much coming up he never let his surroundings bring him down.
"I'm Blessed with all my success I've had, I know that. But I think anybody that comes from the project can look at my story and say: 'I can do that too."
- Jay Z
