Transcript of John Dewey
John Dewey was a pragmatist educator, writer, lecturer and philosopher whose theories had a profound influence on education.
Influenced by educators such as Rousseau and Froebel, Dewey studied the ways children learn most effectively.
Still remain as a fundamental influence on modern schooling.
He was a pragmatist, one of the most current and timeless theories.
Throughout his life he was able to publish over 100s of books and articles as well as his own School.
The Life of Dewey
He lived through the American Civil War which influenced many of his democratic ideas on many areas.
Traditional education lacks holistic understanding of the student:
Can be too structured and one dimensional
Tends to be focused on discipline
Students memorize from textbook and repetition
There is little assessment for enduring understanding
Does not nurture for creativity or originality
All students are identified as same and are expected to learn the same. There is no room for different ability groupings.
Essentially a view of education that emphasizes the need to learn by doing
Dewey believed that “It is only through experience that man learns about the world and only by the use of his experience he can maintain and better himself in the world.

Criticisms of John Dewey
Influence in Today's Curriculum
Today teachers believe that one of the most remarkable influences John Dewey has had on education was his understanding of the importance of ordinary, everyday experiences in children´s lives.
His influence also translated to the U.K. particularly in the 60s, where it had an influence on the Plowden report.
Dewey's ideas also influence many other influential experiential models and advocates. Problem-Based Learning (PBL), for example, a method used widely in education today, incorporates Dewey's ideas pertaining to learning through active inquiry.
Dewey School Class of June 1955. Founded in 1896.
1859 - Born in Vermont USA, Burlington, 20th October
Graduated from University of Vermont in Philosophy, second in his class.
1884 - he studied Philosophy and Psychology
Became a High school teacher for 3 years.
Gained a PhD in Philosophy at John Hopkins University
Commences teaching at University of Michigan as an assistant professor.
Married a woman named Harriet Alice Chipman in 1886, who influenced his interest in education.
1894 - Joins the University of Chicago and becomes the Head of Philosophy Department, he remained there until 1904.
During his time there, for two years he served at the director of its School of Education.
1904 - Became a Professor at Columbia University
He later retired in 1930, whilst his wife died three years later.
John Dewey passed away in 1952 after suffering from pneumonia.

“The belief that all education comes through experiences does not mean that all experiences are equally educative”
Dewey's view, children should be allowed to explore their environments.
The role of the teacher in this setting would be to serve more as a facilitator than an instructor.
His view of the classroom was deeply rooted in democratic ideals, which promoted equal voice among all participants in the learning experience.
Interest / Impulse relationship can lead to
promotion of teaching towards individual student interest as opposed to scholarly material;
Dewey’s ideas about education were unrealistic;
Dewey was rigid in his opposition to lecture style of teaching;
Advocates of the traditional school felt that Dewey was too liberal and extreme;
Dewey’s educational philosophy never attracted a strong following, though it has inspired many modifications in the traditional curriculum.
He enrolled into University at the age of just 15.
Dewey's publications reached over 1,000 with articles, books and essays.
