Scarves weren't always used for style or warmth. Some people wore and still do wear them for cultural reasons. Scarves come is a wide variety of shapes, length, colors and designs. They date back all the way to 1350 BC
1000-230 BC
On anicent Chinese sculptures of warriors, there were scarves found on then dating back to 1000 BC. Around 230 BC a Chinese Emeperor (Cheng) prescribed his warriors don cloth scarves as a symbol of their rank.
10 AD
In Ancient Roman Empire, they wore what was called "sweat cloths" that were used to wipe sweat off ones face during hard labor. It became an accessory that they wore around the neck, over shoulders or they would tie it as a belt by the waist. Emperor Nero was known for always having one of these on his waist.
Eleanor of Aquitaine, one was the wealthiest and powerful women in the middle ages wore scarves "gossamer cascade" from the tip of a tall pointed hat, starting a new fashion trend.
Egyptians started "belly dancing". This is when the dancers started wearing costumes that included scarf-like belts worn around the hips.
16th & 17th century
Around the 16th and 17th century Croatian soldiers wore scarves symbolizing their military rank. It was similar to the Ancient Chinese in 230 BC. The lower class soldiers wore cotton ones while the officers wore ones that were made of silk that was expensive. It became popular to demonstrate political support by the colors of ones scarf.
In the early England days, it was like a tradition for the deceased to to give away scraves to loved ones at funeral ceremonies . The Massachusetts passed a law barring people from giving scarves away at funerals
1350 BC
One of the first scarf wearers was Queen Nefertiti. Scarves were viewed as a social status in Anicent Egypt.
1150 [Middle Ages]
Its said that Third Duke of Krakow invented the knit scarf in this year.
The French ready-to-wear graphic silk scarves were born
Queen Victoria popularized in scarves that differentiated between the upper, lower and middle classes. (She was the monarch of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 1837 until her death)
Isadora Duncan, was considered to be the mother of modern dance, she was popular for the flowing scarf. Her scarf got caught on the tire of a car causing her to die. :|
Plaid scarves from Burberry were founded in this year.
The knitting scarves became a devoted war time duty in the United States.
Fur scarves became really high and popular in fashion this year.
This year it was popular to wear scarves as headbands, wrapped around the waist and chest as a shirt.
Nowadays people don't only wear scarves for just warmth or just style. Some culturally beliefs require scarves. Back then, scarves weren't looked at as only fashion but some time frames, they were looked at as symbolic. Now there are many scarves that come in different shapes, some thick some thin, different colors, and different designs.
