Transcript of D-Day Germany

D-Day from a germans standpoint In 1944 Edwin Rommel was put in charge of strengthening the Atlantic Wall's defenses. The Atlantic Wall was built along the coasts of France, The Channel Islands, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany,Norway and Denmark The main goal was to prevent allied landings. So they built over 14,000 german bunkers. Mines and anti-tank obstacles were planted all along the beaches.By the time of the invasion Germans had laid almost 6 million mines in northern France. Germans also emplanted sharp spears in fields where they thought American parachuters would try to land. they called these spears "Rommel's Aspargus" Rommel firmly believed that germany would be defeated unless they could stop the allies at the beaches. On June 6th.. the Allies invaded The germans were suprised because they didnt think the americans would attack due to the weather. Rommel didnt think the americans would attack so he went to his wifes birthday party. 160,000 allied troops landed on the beaches of normandy and were met by heavy german fire. Many landing craft were blown to splinters and few soldiers made it onto the beach Soldiers were sprayed with machine gun fire as the tried to advance onto the beach. The germans sprayed thousands of rounds onto the beach from bunkers. As the allies got out of their transports, they were met by a giant wall of pill boxes and bunkers raining fire on them from every direction. Within the first couple of hours, on Omaha beach alone, the Germans had killed about 5,000 americans. The germans had one of the best defenses ever assembled but what they didnt factor in was the paratroopers who landed behind enemy lines and attackd from the rear. 13,000 paratroopers landed behind enemy lines which confused the germans. They stayed and fought in small groups for days. The allies fought the germans all the way back acroos the seine river. On midnight of June 24th operation overlord is considered over. The German had 200,000 men killed or wounded. Captured german soldiers were sent to american POW camps at the rate of 30,000 per month D-Day was a huge win for the allies and helped them win the war.
