What sports drink has the most electrolytes?

Created by: Halee Guy, Rayne Wells, Remy Johnson, and Daniel Baldor.

In this project we are using a multimeter to find out "Which sports drink has the most electrolytes." The four sports drinks we are using are: vitamin water, gatorade, powerade, and mio energy.

2. Lay out materials
3.Wrap copper wire arond 2 inch straw
4. Measure 1/4 of a cup into a measuring cup
5. Pour sports drinks into containers
6. Place straw into liquid sports drink
7.Use 9 volt battery for charge
8. Tape bottom-Half of 9 volt battery with electrical tape
9. Alligator clamp ends of metal peices on multimeter.(make sure they're connected)
10. Place conductance sensor in sports drink make sure completely immersed
11.Record results
12.Repeat steps 3-11 with different sports drink each time.

In 1965 University of Florida assistant coach wanted to know why his players were being affected by heat related to illness, so he had scientists research why this was happening. They discovered it was due to electrolyte loss and carbohydrate loss. They created a drink named gatorade and after, the Gators started to use it.

How does the mulimeter work?

A multimeter is a set of leads. You attach these leads to the component or portion of the curcuit that you're testing. you adjust a knob to set the test you wish to perform such as resistance, voltage, or current as well as the range to test.
Why does your body need electrolytes?
Electrolytes are positively and negatively charged ions that are formed when minerals or other salts dissolve and seperate in water. Electrolytes are impotant becuase they regulate the fluids in our body.
What is an electrolyte?
An electrolyte is any substance containing free ions that make the substance electrically conductive.
Where do electrolytes get used?
Electrolytes get used by cells in the body to control fluid passeage across cell membranes. cells regulate the movement of electrolytes into and out of them, which causes water to follow the charged particles wherever they go.
What is in the sports drinks?
Sports drinks contain electrolytes and clucose. Electrolytes composistion is sodium,potassium,calcium, magnesium,chloride, bicarbonate, phosphate and sulphate. Glucose is just carbohydrates stored in the liver and muscles. All sports drinks also contain citric acid which can erode the teeth.
If we test the amount of electrolytes found in they typical sports drinks found at walmart then we beilve that gatorade will have the most electrolytes becuase gatorade was the first sports drink and it was proven that it replenished carbohydrates and electrolytes.

Conclusion
After doing our research and testing the different types of sports drinks, we found that GreatValue Drink Enhancer (with water) contained the most electrolytes with an average of 137.2 amps. Electrolytes are ions, which make the substance electrically conductive. We tested this by constructing a simple conductance sensor. We have disproven our hypothesis because we believed that Gatorade contained the most electrolytes. Along the way, we did make a few mistakes. We couldn't connect the pH Sensor correctly to the batteries and a glass jar was accidentally broken. We measured the electrolytes in ammeter's, or amps. Amps are a measure of electricity produced. The red Vitamin Water had the least amount of electrolytes with an average of 5.93 amps and the red Mio Drink Enhancer was 2nd place with the most electrolytes. (131.3 amps) Orange Vitamin Water, red Powerade and red Gatorade were all about the same.
