Battles * Battle of Bull Run * * Battle of Bull Run * Critical Events &
Battles This was the 1st major battle of the Civil War! Even though the North lost 2,700 men compared to the South's 2,000 men they lost, there were still many important lessons about war learned from this battle. 1) Fighting would be bloody! 1) Fighting would be bloody! 2) The war would NOT end quickly! 2) The war would NOT end quickly! 3) southern soldiers would fight fiercely to defend Confederacy! 3) Southern soldiers would fight fiercely to defend Confederacy! * Battle of Shiloh * * Battle of Shiloh * After Grant captured 2 Confederate forts, the Confederates retreated to Corinth, MS. Grant followed them! BUT, before Grant's reinforcements arrived, the Confederates met them at Shiloh, TN! But as soon as William Tecumseh Sherman's troops came in to help Grant, the South was forced to retreat! This was a great victory for the North! William Tecumseh Sherman's * Battle of Gettysburg * * Battle of Gettysburg * George Pickett, a Confederate General in the North, led his troops to an attack on Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It was a failed assault. George Pickett, Gettysburg, Pickett tried to charge the Union on the last day of battle, but failed terribly. The Union defeated them! This was terrible for the Confederacy! This defeat crushed the Confederacy's hopes of getting any victories in the North! The South never fully recovered from the defeat at Gettysburg. This was a definite advantage to the North! * Battle of Vicksburg * * Battle of Vicksburg * Vicksburg was the last major Confederate stronghold on Miss. River! The Siege of Vicksburg began! Union forces surrounded the city of Vicksburg! Siege of Vicksburg The Union prevented the delivery of ANY supplies to the Confederacy! This weakened the Confederacy majorly! The Union gained complete control of the Mississippi River! The Union finally SPLIT the Confederacy in 2! It looked so far like the North was winning the war! North President Abraham Lincoln Abe made alot of choices that helped the Union win the Civil War! One smart choice was he fired McClellan (who was hesitant to fight) and made Grant in charge of the Union army. McClellan Grant Grant wasn't afraid to go in and attack. He wanted to win, and he wanted to get the war over with. He was always the one going in for attacks! Grant Pennsylvania. Another smart choice made by Lincoln was he passed the Emancipation Proclamation. This said that all slaves in the Confederacy were free. Emancipation Proclamation This didn't free many slaves, but when it did free some, it weakened the Confederacy (military action). Many slaves rushed to join the Union army! Political Leader of the South South President Jefferson Davis Davis wasn't very involved with the war. He mainly just let Robert E. Lee make alot of the decisions. The fact Davis wasn't very involved helped the North! Robert E. Lee North Ulysses S. Grant Grant was a tough fighter! He wasn't afraid to go in and attack. He wanted to finish his enemy. But he wouldn't stop there, he would keep attacking his enemy until they were finished. He showed no fear! This was a GREAT advantage to the North! Military Leader in South South Robert E. Lee Robert E. Lee was a strong fighter, but he could only take so much. He only had so many men/supplies to work with. Which made things a lot harder! Lee surrendered at Appomattox! He couldn't take anymore! Geographic
Advantages & Disadvantages Geographic
Advantages & Disadvantages ONE ADVANTAGE OF THE NORTH: ADVANTAGE The North had 70% of the nation's railroad mileage! The North had 70% of the
nation's railroad mileage! This made travel/transportation easier for the Union! It was also a way the Union could receive supplies faster than the Confederacy! This was a definite advantage to the North that could have helped them win the war! ONE DISADVANTAGE TO THE SOUTH: DISADVANTAGE A disadvantage to the South that helped the North win the war, was they had a
large area to cover! large area to cover! Since the South had such a bigger area to cover, it weakened their force. They had to spread out more, leaving certain spots weak! Also, it could be possible that their soldiers got tired alot faster because of the distance they may have had to travel! This was GREAT for the North! This made it easier to attack the South. Demographic
Advantages & Diadvantages Demographic
Advantages & Diadvantages ONE ADVANTAGE OF THE NORTH: ADVANTAGE The North had a higher population than the South! The North had a higher population than the South! This was good for the North because this gave them more soldiers, workers, helpers, etc. This helped them in elections, wars, etc. It was a good advantage to the North! ONE DISADVANTAGE TO THE SOUTH: DISADVANTAGE Many slaves were escaping due to the Emcancipation Proclamation. Slaves were escaping to join the Union army or just to gain plain freedom. This left the South with a lower population than before, with less workers, then leading to no business being made. Economic
Advantages & Disadvantages Economic
Advantages & Disadvantages ONE ADVANTAGE OF THE NORTH: ADVANTAGE The North held 85% of the nation's factories! The North held 85% of the nation's factories! With theses factories, the North was able to make all the new technology for war! Also, having all theses factories made the North a good amount of money! ONE DISADVANTAGE TO THE SOUTH: DISADVANTAGE The South had barely any workers! The South had barely any workers! If slaves weren't escaping to the Union, they barely put in any work effort to help the North defeat the South. This meant the South wasn't getting any crops or food! OR making any money! This was good for the North! Technology
