Reading Efficiently,
Start With What You Know
Use everything you know about a course to help you be a more efficient reader and more focused note-taker.
Increase What You Know With a Quick Glance
Of course you already know that you're in the first marking period of an American History course and focusing on early America.
Okay, I skimmed for main ideas in the Section.
What now?
When answering "What's important?," you should remember the focus of the book, chapter, and section, which you determined in the skim stage.
Okay. I finished
adding supporting ideas to the main ideas in my notes.
What now?

Stage 3: Post-Read
Titles matter:
In this case, your textbook reminds us that what's important when reading this book is
American history.
You also know that you're in the

first marking period
of a US 1 History course.
Therefore, your
notes
for this class should be focused on early American history.
But, you can still apply the strategy of "starting with what you know" to help narrow your focus before you read.
This process of "starting with what you know," is the first stage in the process of reading efficiently and note-taking effectively.
Stage 1: The Skim
Let's look at the first page of Chapter 3:
Warm-Up
What are the characteristics of "good notes"?

Brainstorm a list of things that good notes should do or have.

Tip 1: Always "pre-read" by skimming the titles, both for the whole work and the sections.
At a quick glance, what else do we know?
Use sticky-notes to make these initial notes. These will help guide you as you take your notes later.
Chapter 3 focus:

Who settled? When?
What kind?
Where did they come from? Where did they settle?
Why did they come?
How did they establish their colonies?
Make predictions about what you'll be reading in this chapter to help focus your reading and note-taking

Tip 2: Look for main ideas "early" or "late."
The first paragraph doesn't have a heading. What is its purpose in the chapter?
When reading a chapter, use this introductory paragraph to locate the chapter's main idea
What is the main idea? How do we find it?

Stage 2: Slow-Read
Transfer your main ideas to your Cornell Note template, one at a time.
As you transfer each main idea, go back into the section and read more carefully, adding reasons, evidence, causes, effects, & connections important to your main idea
Phew! Done . . . take a breather
Return to your notes later, skim through them. As you're skimming, determine the "big ideas" in them and write them, in question form when possible, in the left margin (How/Why are great question starters!).
Then, write your summary/summaries. Think about the process we used. Use the main ideas to help you.

There are many qualities of good notes. To survive the overwhelming reading-load of college and Honors/AP courses in high school, our reading must be efficient and our notes must be effective.

focus on main ideas and key terms
highlight connections & patterns
be a lecture guide
serve as a study tool
