The first recorded use of the word “computer” was in 1613 in a book called “The yong mans gleanings” by English writer Richard Braithwait I haue read the truest computer of Times, and the best Arithmetician that euer breathed, and he reduceth thy dayes into a short number. It referred to a person who carried out calculations, or computations, and the word continued with the same meaning until the middle of the 20th century. From the end of the 19th century the word began to take on its more familiar meaning, a machine that carries out computations.

2,000 computers are in use in the United states.
1961 Leonard Kleinrock publishes his first paper entitled "Information Flow in Large Communication Nets" is published May 31, 1961.
1992-Introduction of Windows
1993-Windows NT 3.1 was released that supported 32-bit programs.
1995-Sony releases its first PlayStation – To date, over 100 million have been sold.

1996-Toshiba released the "Libretto" sub-notebook. With a volume of 821.1 cm³ and a weight of just 840 g, it was the smallest PC compatible computer to be released.
1997"Grand Theft Auto" and "Quake 2" were released while Lara Croft returned in "Tomb Raider 2". As the standards for graphics kept increasing, 3d graphics cards were beginning to become mandatory for game players.
1999-Linux Kernel 2.2.0 released. The number of people running Linux is estimated at over 10 million, making it not only an important operating system in the Unix world, but an increasingly important one in the PC world.
2001-Microsoft releases the Xbox
2002-RIM released the first BlackBerry smartphone.
2003-Mozilla Firefox 1.0 released, which later became Microsoft Internet Explorer's biggest competitor since Netscape Navigator.
2005-Microsoft announces their next consumer operating system, Windows Vista, to be released in early 2007
2005-Microsoft releases the Xbox 360.

2005Intel releases the Core 2 processor.
2006-Sony releases the PlayStation 3.
Nintendo releases the Wii.2006
2007-The first iPhone was introduced by Apple.
2008-The first public beta version of the Google Chrome web browser was released. Chrome subsequently became the most popular web browser in the world, overtaking Internet Explorer.
2009-Microsoft releases Windows 7.
2010-Apple Inc. unveils the iPad, running Apple iOS.
2011-Toshiba announces the Toshiba Tablet, a 10 inch tablet powered by a Tegra 2 process and Android 3.0
