Transcript of Characteristics of Life

What is the criteria to be considered alive?
Living things (organisms) are made of basic units called CELLS
some organisms are UNIcellular

some organisms are MULTIcellular
all living things are made of cells

cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things

new cells are produced from living things
Schleiden (1838) and Schwann (1839)
Virchow (1855)
Living things must be able to REPRODUCE

All living things have a common GENETIC CODE
All living things must GROW and DEVELOP
change in SIZE
change in SHAPE
All living things must use and obtain ENERGY
all the chemical reactions within an organism
building molecules (photosynthesis)
growth & development
breaking down molecules (digestion)
All living things must respond to STIMULI in their environment
Stimulus = Dust

Response = Sneeze
All living things must maintain HOMEOSTASIS
keeping stable internal conditions
Example: Body Temperature
Living things must EVOLVE
as a group, change over time to be better adapted for their environment
Characteristics of Life
(1) Made up of CELLS

(3) Universal GENETIC CODE

(5) Obtain and use ENERGY

(6) Respond to STIMULI

(7) Maintain HOMEOSTASIS
