Poetic Devices Demons Imagine Dragons Conflict Laura, Kamal, Jee-Woon, Gabriel English 2-4 The main conflict in the song is person vs. self, as the man in the song clashes with his inner demons. Throughout the song he attempts to overpower them in order to become a good person and not harm the woman he loves, enduring much suffering in the process. Tone the song talks about sinners, demons, greed, etc.
having to choose between staying with someone you love or leaving to protect them In this line demons are not actual devils or evil spirits, but the manifestation of the man's innermost darkness. Line 2 Metaphor: "When the cards all fold" Line 27, 28 Imagery: "When the lights fade out/ All the sinners crawl" Line 1, 2, & 4 Rhyme: "old" "When the cards all fold" is a metaphor pertaining to poker; in poker, when you fold your cards, you are admitting defeat. The man in the song describes a situation in life when all hope seems lost. Vivid description of a figurative situation. It means that when no one is looking the people who chastise others because of their faults act just as bad The ending sound "old" is repeated at the end of each line. The rhyming words appear in the form of cold, fold, and gold. Line 51 Diction: "woven" Line 11 Symbolism: But with the beast inside Line 28 Diction: "All the sinners crawl" Rhyme Scheme "It's woven in my soul" the word choice in this line adds more meaning to the song The beast inside does not stand for a literal beast, but rather the repugnant and sinful traits every person possesses. AABA CCDC EFGG HHI JKGLGG DDMD NNMN OOFE HHI JKGLGG. This rhyme scheme is blank verse. When the days are cold
And the cards all fold
And the saints we see
Are all made of gold

When your dreams all fail
And the ones we hail
Are the worst of all
And the blood’s run stale

I want to hide the truth
I want to shelter you
But with the beast inside
There’s nowhere we can hide

No matter what we breed
We still are made of greed
This is my kingdom come
This is my kingdom come

When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide

When the curtain’s call
Is the last of all
When the lights fade out
All the sinners crawl

So they dug your grave
And the masquerade
Will come calling out
At the mess you made

Don’t want to let you down
But I am hell bound
Though this is all for you
Don’t want to hide the truth

No matter what we breed
We still are made of greed
This is my kingdom come
This is my kingdom come

When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide

They say it's what you make
I say it's up to fate
It's woven in my soul
I need to let you go

Your eyes, they shine so bright
I want to save their light
I can't escape this now
Unless you show me how

When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide Line 19 Connotation: It's where my demons hide The literal meaning of crawl is not being used. Instead it describes how the sinners come out with an eerie quality. suggests he can't stop his demons
he is "hellbound"
believes he can not control his fate/ destiny which will inevitably affect the one he loves in a bad way Dark Hopeless Theme The theme of the song is how in life people might sometimes come face to face with ostensibly unbeatable obstacles. These obstacles turn out to be manageable, however, so as long as a person perseveres and has the support of a loved one.
In the beginning of the song the man possess a morose disposition, as he believes he is unable to overcome the darkness inside of him and fated to hurt the woman he loves. The man becomes progressively more optimistic, however, and by the end of the song expresses hope that his lover might be able to help him cope with and, eventually, overcome his demons. I want to hide the truth: He wants to protect his love from the ugly truth I want to shelter you: Does not want his love to get hurt by his "demons" But with the beast inside: Refers to the beast/ his demons as something that is not actually a part of him There's nowhere we can hide: Not only can his love not hide from the demons but he can not hide from them either When the days are cold: This line gives the song a depressing mood and since it is the first line it has a bigger impact. And the cards all fold: In poker, when one has a hand they can not possibly win with, they "fold their hands" in a way of admitting defeat." And the saints we see: The people or saints that we worship, idolize, and try to model our lives around are not as perfect as they may seem. Are all made of gold: When you feel my heat: Heat, in this case, is not referring to temperature but anger and other strong emotions Look into my eyes: He is asking her to read his emotions and have empathy for him. It's where my demons hide: x4 Relating to the previous line, he is telling her that she would be able to see his pain and anger in his eyes. Since the line is repeated its puts more emphasis Don't get too close: He is trying to protect her by ensuring that she does not get hurt by becoming too attached or develop deep feelings for him. It's dark inside: There are dark feelings/ intentions inside of him which he can not control. Your eyes they shine so bright: He knows and loves that she is always happy and caring towards him. I want to save that light: He wants to treasure and protect the goodness inside of her. I can't escape this now: He can't escape the dark emotions and impulses which he is experiencing that are directly affecting her happiness Unless you show me how: At this point in the song, he is asking for her help in order to escape the beasts within him. This is the main resolution of the whole song as we see him have hope that he can become a better person. Summary Person vs. self The song has a lively, vivacious melody, but the lyrics actually hide a message much more lugubrious that may be overlooked if not listened to carefully.
The song is about a man troubled by the darker aspects of his personality. Throughout the song, the man struggles to overcome his darker nature and be a good person.
The song uses many metaphors and symbols to create vivid imagery. Questions Here is the rhyme scheme: AABA CCDC EFGG HHI JKGLGG DDMD NNMN OOFE HHI JKGLGG. What type of verse is this? A. Blank Verse
