Eliese Kendrick Discussion Question: Think of a time that a leader tried to direct you, but then WAS/WAS NOT successful because they did not exemplify their own personal values. What was that like? CREDIBILITY IS THE FOUNDATION OF LEADERSHIP! VALUES: “enduring beliefs about how things should be accomplished”
HOW DO WE MODEL THE WAY? To earn and sustain personal credibility you must be able to clearly articulate deeply personal held beliefs. This is the foundation of modeling the way as a leader. VALUES -Leaders have to earn respect by staying true to their own values. PURPOSE OF FINDING VALUES -The leaders who are admired most are those who believe strongly in something and are willing to stand up for their beliefs -Solid personal values result in respect and loyalty “Setting an example is not the main means of influencing others, it is the only means.” –Albert Einstein NOW WHAT? Build morale SET THE EXAMPLE Leaders practice what they preach

You are the leader of a student advisory board which ranges from undergraduate first year students to graduate students. You are a sophomore. As you are leading your group, what types of problems might you encounter with the age differences and how would you deal with that? DISCUSSION Learn from others! SOLUTION “Leadership has a harder job to do than just choose sides. It must bring sides together.” -Jesse Jackson Be respectful Clarify your values. There must be agreement on shared values RECAP People are always testing your credibility; you are always onstage
Lead with INTEGRITY!!! (doing the right thing when no one is looking)
Leaders don’t just “talk the talk” when it comes to values, they “walk the walk”
