Transcript of Copy of Magnetic stripe card

Given the importance magnetic stripe cards can play in a business' internal security, marketing campaign, or payment system, it is obvious that businesses need to use a card provider that understands their needs and is ready to meet them in a professional, cost-effective and timely manner. The magnetic stripe divides the information into several coded tracks. A stripe encoder assigns and writes the data into these tracks using a programmed algorithm. A stripe reader later recovers the information by analyzing the electronic signals. Different particle densities within the stripe determine the signal amplitude of the stripe, and the signal amplitude determines the sort of electronic reader required to obtain data from the card. Magnetic stripe cards are used everywhere in modern society. They can be found on items as diverse as Credit cards, debit cards, employee badges, government identification cards, public transport passes, train tickets, customer loyalty cards, gift cards and express payment cards. Disadvantages Magnetic stripe cards are useful but have their own disadvantages. If you lose them you will have a hard time making new ones. If they are credit cards and someone finds them they might use them for buying things with your money. It also takes time to make a card and it is often complicated to get used to it. Magnetic strip technology is extremely reliable and has been thoroughly tested over the years. Its longevity is proof that magnetic strips accomplish what they set out to do. Magnetic strips are very similar to the magnetic recording that is used within VCR and disk technology; however, they only record sounds and images, whereas magnetic strips record data. RELIABILITY VERSATILITY Magnetic technology is extremely beneficial in that it can be altered, modified and rewritten continuously. Magnetic strips can be reused several times. This is why they are embedded on credit cards or other materials that continuously rely upon changing data. DURABILITY Magnetic strips are exceptionally durable. Unlike magnetic storage that is used within tapes, magnetic strips are much more robust and are built into another strong material, such as plastic. Although they record data, magnetic strips are still relatively immune to outside effects such as water, dirt and moisture contamination. The only time that data within the magnetic strip is prone to getting damaged is when it comes into contact with magnetic objects or stray magnetic fields. SECURITY The majority of data that is contained within magnetic strips is considered sensitive; therefore, security is one of the most important issues facing magnetic strip technology. Since the data stored is not in a readable form, it offers added security to the user. Magnetic strips work via a tiny row of magnets. Any data that is entered into the strip alters the polarity of the magnet. The changes in the polarity are read in binary code as ones and zeros.

eHow.com ADVANTAGES MAGNETIC STRIPE CARDS GET SMART! 1. It doesn’t work in a space, therefore requiring close contact to the reader.
2. Data can be harm by stray magnetic fields.
3. Since it’s not in human readable form can be a drawback in some applications.
