Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) Jean-Michel Basquiat was an American contemporary graffiti artist who was born December 22, 1960 in Brooklyn, New York. His mother was Puerto Rican and his father was from the Haitian origin. Basquiat was fluent in French, Spanish and English by the time he was seven due to his parent’s nationalities. Basquiat showed an interest for art and his mother encouraged him to draw, paint and to participate in art related activities. When Basquiat started attending high school, he and his friend Al Diaz started graffiti spray-painting on the walls of buildings in lower Manhattan. Their main signature on the art work was “SAMO”. Jean Michel The Beginning. Basquiat's Career In September of 1978, Basquiat dropped out of his senior year of high school. He moved out of his home and started living with friends. He made a living by selling t-shirts and postcards on Manhattan streets.
He also worked in the Unique Clothing Warehouse on Broadway. He formed a band and they performed in a couple of clubs. First Art Recognition! (: “The Radiant Child” was published in ArtForum by Rene Ricard in 1981. This made Basquiat more popular to the art world. Basquiat's Artwork Jean-Michel Basquiat collaborated with a very popular artist named Andy Warhol. Basquiat needed Andy’s fame, and Andy needed Basquiat’s new blood. The two became very close friends. Jean-Michel Basquiat Andy Warhol After Andy Warhol passed away in 1987, Basquiat was dealing with grief constantly. His depression and need for drugs increased. Jean-Michel Basquiat passed away after heroin overdose in a New York studio in August 12, 1988 at the age of 27. Credits:
