Ballistic missiles follow a ballistic flight path with the objective of delivering one or more warheads to predetermined target.

The first ballistic missile was the A-4, commonly known as the V-2 rocket developed by Nazi Germany in the 1930s and 1940s.The first successful launch of a V-2 was on October 3, 1942, and began operation on September 6, 1944, against Paris, followed by an attack on London two days later. By the end of World War II, May 1945, over 3,000 V-2s had been launched.
Flight
It follows ballistic flight path..see figure: 1c
It uses GPS to find its target.
During its accent it uses multiple rocket engines respectively to provide thrust.
Ballistic missiles are just like rocket with stealth technology and a warhead for distruction.

Warhead is the explosive material delivered by a rocket or missile.
It can be neuclear or a conventional .
Ballistic missiles are capable of taking bigger and multiple warheads.
Main body consists of
fuel cells
electrical equipment
communication devices
computers.
Ballistic missiles are guided before flight unlike other missiles.some of them can avoid interceptors by changing their flight path.
Engine :
Ballistic missiles use multiple stage rocket engines to carry the missile out of earth's atmosphere.
Usually engine are fed by dry fuel,preloaded in the missile,so that the missile is launched quickly and doesn't require fueling before launch.

Types of ballistic missiles
Depending on their range ballistic missiles have five types.
Tactical ballistic missile : Range (150 km - 300 km)
Battlefield range ballistic missile (BRBM): Range less than 100 km
Theatre ballistic missile (TBM): Range (300 km - 3,500 km)
Short-range ballistic missile (SRBM): Range 1,000 km or less
Medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM): Range (1,000 km - 3,500 km)
Long-range ballistic missile (LRBM): Range (3,500 km - 5,500 km)
Intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM): Range greater than 5500 km
Submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM): All are ICBM Range.

Pros and cons
Advantages :
They can travel faster like 7-8km/s ( i:e Minuteman 3).
They can carry bigger warheads.
They have high Ranges.
Disadvantages :
They are very costly.
They can be tracked by radar.
