The Five People You Meet in Heaven - Mitch Albom
Transcript of The Five People You Meet in Heaven - Mitch Albom
The fifth person Eddie meets in heaven. Tala was a little girl who Eddie saw crawling into the burning fort during the war. Although he lived most of his life in denial, he finds out in heaven that he did kill her in the fire, she taught Ed that life has a purpose. No matter what you do in life, you are here for a reason. You may not even realize what your actions have meant to others. If someone does something special, don’t hesitate – tell them – make their day – you might even make their life!
The Five People You Meet in Heaven - Mitch Albom
The Blue Man
The first person Eddie meets in heaven is the Blue Man. He was a sideshow worker at Ruby Pier when Eddie was a child. He was killed as a result of Eddie running in the street after his ball. The Blue Man teaches Eddie his first lesson: that We all have different perspectives on things; and there is no such thing as a random act; we are all interconnected. We can certainly see this in any workplace. Reflect on how someone’s bad (or good) mood or comments impact everyone around them. Knowing when to step down and be that bigger person shows true traits of a leader.
The second person Eddie meets in heaven; his former war captain. He taught Eddie that sacrifice, whether big or small, is not something to regret. We are only passing something on. What a nice way of changing something that seems like a negative (giving something up), to something that is positive (passing a “gift” on)!
The third person Eddie meets in heaven and also Ruby Pier's namesake, Ruby. She teaches Eddie that forgiveness and letting go of things lets you live life to the fullest. Hate is like a poison that eats you from the inside out. Life is lighter when we let in the love, being an optimistic person is key to becoming not only a leader but a wise leader.
Eddie’s wife and only true love. Marguerite was the only happiness in Eddie's life. She is the fourth person he meets in heaven and she teaches him that there are many types of love. Life has to end, but love does not. A lost love is still love. Anyone who has lost a loved one knows this! Love goes on in the memories we cherish. Moving on but holding on to what matters, seeing the bigger picture is a priority when talking about leadership qualities.

The Five People You Meet in Heaven is a novel by Mitch Albom. It follows the life and death of a maintenance man named Eddie. In a heroic attempt to save a little girl from being killed by an amusement park ride that is about to fall, Eddie is killed and sent to heaven, where he encounters five people who significantly impacted him while he was alive. Eddie went on thinking his life was purposeless, he just didn't see the leader traits within until he me these five people...
We're All Leaders of Our Own
Like Eddie the “maintenance” man, who impacted many people by his seemingly mundane activities, we are all important. Our words, our actions, and our behavior, do impact others. We can make a positive difference in this world by the little things we do! It all starts with being the leaders that are born within and the self learned leaders, the only difference between us and Eddie is that he had to figure out later what traits he had within.
My Connection as the Reader
The Five People You Meet In Heaven taught me to really go out there and experience life and learn from my mistakes. It’s like the captain said, “I figure it’s like in the Bible, the Adam and Eve deal? Adam’s first night on earth? When he lays down to sleep? He thinks it’s all over, right…His eyes are closing and he thinks he’s leaving this world, right? Only he isn’t. He wakes up the next morning and he has a fresh new world to work with, but he has something else too. He has his yesterday.” Even though some of us weren't born leaders, by the life experiences we've had we've learned how to become true leaders. For some of us it might take till the day we die, others may be different. Just remember that your life has a purpose.
